Tehachapi, California is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Kern River and has a small airport. The town was founded in 1869 by Captain George Prentice and his family as Pensioner Ranch No. 828. It became an incorporated town in 1907. Tehachapi was named for Hachechi Chávez y Tijerina, President of Mexico from 1876 to 1880. The community's first post office opened in 1893 and closed in 1912. In 1951, Tehachapi Elementary School reopened after being closed for many years due to some damage done by the February earthquake that struck nearby San Joaquin Valley townships that year; it had been closed since 1923 when its previous owner defaulted on payments made to the state government for use of its land). In 1957-1959 a new school building (the present dayElementary School) was built for the townspeople using local lumber which had been turned over to the school district by former ranchers who had sold their land east of town after dying during World War II. Tehachapi is a town in Kern County, California. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It has been claimed by both the Yokuts and Mono people as their birthplace. Tehachapi is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills about 43 miles (70 km) east of Fresno and 158 miles (248 km) north of Los Angeles. The land that now makes up Tehachapi was first acquired by Juan Bautista Alvarado on December 30, 1776 from Lipman Indians who had resisted Spanish settlement in that area. Rancho San Román was given to Manuel Nieto on October 9, 1849. On November 7, 1860 Mexican Federal troops burned down the Nieto Adobe while searching for fugitives General Antonio López de Santa Anna and his forces invading California from Mexico City. This event is commemorated with a plaque at the old Tohono O’odham Nation Tribal Headquarters in Enterprise along Interstate 5 near milepost 239 of the San Bernardino Freeway system. In 1874 Elihu Root acquired 640 acres (250 ha) of rancho south of present day Tehachapi for $4 per acre ($10/ha). This purchase increased when he purchased an additional 840 acres (300 ha) on January 10, 1875 for $8 per acre ($16/ha). Root's ranch would eventually span 1,040 acres (400 ha) and include all or part of what are now Vernon Hills, Downey Heights, Sylmar, Glassell Park and North Hollywood neighborhoods in Los Angeles County as well as parts of Carson Valley outside Pasadena city limits. In 1886 California Goldrush began when prospectors discovered gold near Whatcom River which flowed into Lake Tehachapi northwest of present day town site; this discovery led to increased activity around town site including new housing development and a hotel called “The Howland” built on what is now Pico Boulevard between First Street eastward to Second Street westward; today’s business district around First Street includes several hundred residences dating back to this period including such renowned residence architect Alfred McBride's Laurelhurst House-now known as The Ritz-Carlton Hotel-and other notable buildings including our own post office building still standing today across from First Street Stationer's Drug Store
