The name means "place where the river runs clear," and may derive from the presence of a large salt lick near the town site. A post office was established at Tecumseh in 1868, and by 1871, Tehachapi had a population of 553 people. The townsite was platted in 1879 by rancher George Purdy and his brother-in-law Augustus C. Mather as Rancho Los Alamitos Mexican Land Grant Part 1b Felicidad de Tijuana y Tijuana on land which then included present-day Tecumseh and most of east side of present day West Bloomfield Avenue between Villa Park and Eastvale Streets; also known as Rancho Santa Anita del Oro Mexican Land Grant Part 1a San Bernardino Valley Mexican Land Grant Part 2 & 3 Felicidad de Tijuana y Tijuana on land now within limits of Tecumseh south to John Day Street west to South Gate Boulevard north to Moorpark Avenue east to Alameda Street south; all now within limits of Kern County). In 1886 Purdy sold this grant for $3 million to Joshua H. Freeman (1841–1922), an American mining engineer who founded Stockton Californian Copper Company (later Pacific Copper Company) in that city, with mines at Menlo Park (now Silicon Valley), Newark (now New Jersey), Yuba City (now California's El Dorado County), and Chowchilla Creek Mines near Ukiah (now Fresno County). On December 21, 1886 Freeman announced that he had purchased two-thirds or $2 million worth of shares in Pacific Copper Company from his father - James H. Freeman - making him sole owner thereof; but it never became operational because Joshua H. Freeman failed to make good on his notes payable thereto amounting to $1 million due January 15, 1889 – some time before incorporation into Tehachapi into what would eventually become Kern County as a result of legislation enacted by Governor Harriman on February 10, 1889 (). In 1912 Harry Wiman opened up Wiman's grocery store across from the old courthouse which still stands today inside the old post office building on First Street NW next door to Red Lobster restaurant
