Tehachapi is located in the Mojave Desert of southern California. The community was founded in 1881 by J.D. Payne and his wife, Mary, as a small town on the banks of the Tehachapi River. In 1923, Payne donated land to the city of Tehachapi to create its present-day boundaries. Today, Tehachapi is a small community with a population of less than 1,000 people. The majority of residents are farmers and ranchers who work outside the community or commute to nearby cities for jobs. The history of Tehachapi is intertwined with that of California. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now California were Spanish settlers who founded Mission San Gabriel Arcangela in 1769. From there they traveled eastward and arrived at Alta California (present-day Los Angeles) in 1821. With Mexican independence from Spain coming about two years later, gold was discovered near Sacramento and other towns began popping up along the way including San Bernardino County seat San Jose (now Santa Clara). By 1848 most of these settlements had disbanded due to Gold Rush fever which caused large numbers of men and women to head out into the mineshafts and new territory without any return trip back home. By 1850, Tehachapi had a population of about 100 people. In 1862, General Doniphan's Central California Expedition discovered gold in the vicinity of Tehachapi. The town began to grow rapidly during this time, with businesses such as stores and hotels opening up. In 1872, Tehachapi became part of Yuma County when that county was created from parts of Kern and Tulare counties. The early years of the 20th century saw some significant changes take place in Tehachapi. First off, World War I ended with victory for Allied forces over Germany; this led to an influx of new settlers into the area who desired agricultural production rather than mining operations. Second off came Prohibition in 1919 which led to a decreased demand for alcohol within the town limits; this caused many businesses within town walls to close down. However, despite these challenges (and others), Tehachapi has continued to thrive throughout its history; it has seen growth both offensively (due to its location) as well as defensively (due to its strong community spirit). In recent years, however, some development has taken place within town boundaries- most notably a new shopping center being constructed just outside town limits. Despite these advancements though, much still needs done within town itself- including increasing access to education and resources so that residents can better participate in local life
Tehachapi, California was founded in 1853 by George H. Tehachapi and his wife, Eliza Jane. It is located in Kern County and has a population of around 106,000 people as of 2019. The town was named after the Tehachapi Mountains which are located in nearby Fresno County. The first store in the town opened in 1854. The townspeople built a school and a sawmill within two years of its founding. The first post office opened in 1857, and the first railroad reached Tehachapi in 1863. In 1870, the first telephone line arrived to Tehachapi from San Francisco. In 1912, the General Electric Company established a plant near Tehachapi to produce electrical equipment for farmers throughout California including those in Kern and Tulare Counties. In 1943, radar equipment was produced at this plant; it became known as GE's " Radar City ". In 1955, Tehachapi voters passed an ordinance establishinglatitude 37° 41' N as the official geographic coordinate of the community.
