Tehachapi, California is a small town located in the Mojave Desert of southern California. The population was 4,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. The first people to live in Tehachapi were the Mono people who arrived around 1849. The town was founded bytecahopi man, Manuel Nieto on November 5, 1875. A post office was established at Tehachapi in 1880 and it remained in operation until 1912 when it became part of Fresno County. In 1905, Tehachapi approved a $2 million bond issue to build the Chico-Mojave Railway which would connect Los Angeles with San Francisco via Chico. The tracks were built and opened for service on October 1, 1907. In 1915, during World War I, Tehachapi enlisted in the United States Army as an artilleryman and served until 1919. After the war he returned to his farm where he died on December 2nd that year at age 86 years old. His wife Olga (née Martinez) continued to operate their farm until her death on May 8th, 1984 also aged 86 years old.. His son Ricardo also operated a farm here for many years before selling it in 1996 and moving away from this area altogether due to harsh living conditions common here during those days ().

In 1863, Mexican troops occupied the area and many English-speaking farmers fled to Southern California while those who remained faced harassment from military forces until 1866 when they were forced out by Mexico. In 1870, sections of Tehachapi became part of Riverside County; but because it had no water source other than wells drilled for cattle grazing purposes, much development did not take place until after World War II when more water resources were developed in nearby San Bernardino County. Today, Tehachapi is known for its wine production which has been enjoyed by Californians for centuries. The economy changed after World War II when production shifted from mining to manufacturing.
