When the Marine Corps was founded in 1846, it wasn’t meant to be a permanent force. Originally, marines were recruited for short-term duty in ports and coastal towns. By 1861, though, the Marines had become a professional unit with their own barracks and drill halls. The first marine deployment took place in 1892 when about 200 Marines embarked on an expedition to Nicaragua. The mission was to help suppress a revolutionary uprising by the citizens of that country. The Marines acquitted themselves well and received much acclaim from their contemporaries. In 1898, during World War I, the Marine Corps became involved in combat as part of American Expeditionary Force (AEF). In January 1915 they landed at Tripoli on behalf of President Woodrow Wilson and ended up helping drive out the Ottoman Turks from that city. The Marines also served as advisors to French forces during World War I. After World War I ended, there was a lull in Marine activity until 1928 when they responded to the Japanese Invasion of China. This time around they deployed with allroupes – detachments consisting of different units under one command – which allowed them more flexibility in their operations than if they were scattered throughout various bases across China like previous wars had done. They also used this opportunity to learn new tactics and techniques which would later come into play during World War II. The Second World War started poorly for America as Japan attacked Pearl Harbor On December 7th 1941; within minutes over 1 million Americans were killed or wounded as Japan committed its most heinous atrocity against humanity since Emperor Hirohito's militaristic rule began seventy years earlier! At long last America could mobilize her vast military resources for peacekeeping ops! And so it began: GEN SHORTY AND HIS MARTINI MARINES ENTER THE WAR AS A PART OF AMERICAN AREA 5 (AMERICA) CENTRAL COMMAND! Although initially intended only for amphibious landings on enemy soil (the "invasion", not "war"), these marines quickly found themselves called upon to fight numerous campaigns both ashore and afloat including Operation Neptune's Spear where Task Unit 8603 fought off 3 dayslong Japanese carrier attack on Leyte Gulf
