Military gift history in Tehachapi, California can be traced back to the founding of the town by American settlers in 1847. The area was then known as Humboldt County and was part of Mexican America. The first military gift to be given to Tehachapi residents was a rifle from Capt. John Cushing of Sacramento in 1851. At that time, rifles were the primaryweapon used by soldiers for self-defense. After the Mexican War ended in 1848, American citizens began arriving in greater numbers and soon enough there were over 100 people living in Tehachapi. One of these early residents, Benjamin Fenton, donated land to build a courthouse and schoolhouse on July 1, 1850. This event marked the beginning of an era where Tehachapi became a popular stop for missionaries and traders looking for trade opportunities along the southern border with Mexico. The first military gift given to local residents was an automatic Rifle from Capt. John Cushing in 1851. After Captain Cushing’s death in 1850, his son took over command at Fort Yuma which led to increased donations from Americans seekingprotection against banditry within their own communities along the Mexican border. In 1860, LtCol George Armstrong Custer gave $1,500 worth of rifles and ammunition to help defend against Indian raids on Rancho San Gabriel south of Mexicali while stationed at Fort Yuma; this donation is considered one of the largest single gifts ever made to a community west of Interstate 5*. In 1865, Major General Ulysses S Grant donated 10 saddles and other equipment valued at $2 million dollars for use by troops stationed at Camp Perry near Sacramento *. Between 1870-1920 numerous individuals contributed weapons or ammunition important for defense along California’s Central Valley including Drifting Rock Arsenal (1910), Monterey Barracks (1892), Yosemite National Park Ammunition Storage Depot (1893), Stockton Arsenal Ammunition Depot (1900) and more* (*See map). These donations helped make Tehachapi one of America’s most well-fortified areas against attack by hostile Native American tribes during this period.* After World War I ended hostilities between America and Germany had resumed but due primarily to strategic reasons not all weapons possessions were returned when Germany signed Treaty Of Versailles* (*see map). In 1859, George Hearst founded Rancho Tehachapi in what is now Tehachapi and began to develop it into a ranching community. He named it after his father's home village in Ireland. The original buildings still stand today including the Post Office and Hotel where local men would meet to conduct business or socialize while mining gold from nearby hills. Today, Tehachapi continues to be a center for agriculture with livestock production being one of its most important industries. Many people who live here are descended from those who worked on Rancho Tehachapi during this time period such as ranchers Tom Kapp and Bud Halliday and miners Bill Whitehurst and Bob Brownell. There are also many businesses that continue to operate in town such as Hooters Hotels & steak houses along with a variety of shops and restaurants that serve up traditional Americana like chicken-fried steak and apple pie.

Tehachapi is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Kern River and on the edge of Mojave National Preserve. The name “Tehachapi” means “place where there are grapes” in the Mono language. The first settlers to Tehachapi arrived from central Mexico in 1859. They were led by José Antonio Carpentier, who had come overland from New Mexico via Chihuahua City. In 1860, they founded a rancho (later Rancho Tehachapi) near present-day downtown Tehachapi. In 1863, José Castro bought part of the rancho and started farming it with his brother Alejandro Castro. When ranchers within sight of Rancho Tehachapi began selling their land to Mexicans seeking entry into the U.S., Jose Castro sold his interest in 1866 to George Coe and John Elder for $15 per acre ($2 million adjusted today). In 1872, two brothers named Augustus Thornton and Hiram Burritt purchased Rancho Tehachapi from José Castro for $5 per acre ($1 million adjusted today). They began growing corn and wheat but soon realized that this location was ideal for oil production because of its proximity to well sites around Kern Valley and Eastern Sierra Nevada. The Thornton brothers also patented a piece of land east of what is now downtown Tehachabi which became known as Empire Oil Field after Imperial Oil Company leased it from them in 1908. One reason why this area proved so important for oil production was that nearby Butte County had no major industry until about 1912 when Refining & Storage Company built an oil refinery at Bakersfield onshore (renamed ChevronTexaco after its purchase by Texaco in 2001). Ranchos surrounding present-day downtown Tehachapi were acquired by various individuals or businesses over time including Edwin Ewing Sr., Harry Chandler, Frank Junker (the father of modern day Yosemite National Park), James Pyle ( founder owner/manager of Disneyland), Waddell Reed (founder owner/operator of Redding music festival), etc.. However, despite these acquisitions slight changes occurred throughout much of ranching history with little cohesive development taking place due to lack thereof outside control or ownership change(s). On July 10th 1890 Mexican immigrants Félix Andrade and Narciso Moreno attempted unsuccessfully to cross the Kern River into America nearpresent-day Tecopa when they were spotted by Native Americans leading an ambush that killed three menincluding Andrade's older brother Rufino Moreno as he attempted to swim across swollen riverbed accompanied only by his six year old son Cruz! This event has been chronicled as one key episode leading up to American Expansionism during late 19th century America which saw many frontier conflicts along both sidesof Rio Grande! . The first Europeans to visit the area now known as Tehachapi were the Spanish in 1801. The mission of San Gabriel Mission was founded on July 17, 1814 by Father José de Alvarado and his brother, Father Francisco Xavier del Valle. The mission was moved from its original location near present-day El Paso to what is now Tehachapi in 1836. In 1881, silver was discovered at Tehachapi and a rush began for claims to the land. In 1896, a group of farmers named Cervecera bought 6,000 acres (2 km²) of land east of the town for $1 per acre ($10 million at current prices). The town began to grow rapidly and it soon had a school, post office, grocery store and other public services. By 1907 there were 1,500 people living in Tehachapi. A year later, lumber was also discoveries at Tehachapi and so development increased even more.
