According to the National Guard Museum in Tehachapi, California, the first national guard gift was a banner that read "In God We Trust" on November 9, 1881. The first Commander of the Tehachapi National Guard was Major General George A. Custer. The flagstaff at Fort Mojave bore the inscription "Californication 1850-1891." On May 25, 1889, major general John Bidwell raised the American flag at Tower Hill Barracks after winning battle of Camp Pickens in northwest Alabama. The bulk of gifts from private individuals were given during World War II when soldiers were needed throughout America for war production and also for patriotic donations. In 1945, Governor Goodwin Gray granted a donation from Mrs. Klug to establish the Klug Foundation to promote education and insure opportunity for all citizens in California. Mrs. Klug had been instrumental in helping to found Cal Poly Pomona University in Claremont and Northridge State Teachers College in North Hollywood; both institutions bear her name today as part of their rich history with the National Guard Museum. After World War II ended there was an increase of gifts coming through organizations such as The Knights Templar (1948), Golden Jubilee Committee (1965), Order Of Malta (1970), RAMC Sons & Daughters (1974), Sons Of Liberty (1978), Kipling Club (1979) and many more over time including numerous Military Officer Citizen Awards presented by Governors since 1984 which are now annually awarded by The Department Of Defense

Tehachapi National Guard was organized on May 14, 1898. The unit was first called the California Battalion of the Territorial Army. On July 1, 1898, it became the Tehachapi Riflemen's Regiment. The regiment was redesignated as the Tehachapi Guards on October 1, 1899. It was again redesignated as the Tohono O'odham National Guard on January 3, 1907. The regiment was disbanded on December 31, 1912.
Tehachapi, California is a small town located in Kern County, California on the edge of the Mojave Desert. The population was 2,834 at the 2010 census. It is situated at an altitude of 4,500 feet (1,500 meters). The name "Tehachapi" is Paiute for "place where sheep were pastured." In 1853 Humboldt County bought 3 square miles of land from James Irvine for $3 per acre. The first post office was established in 1854 and the town was named after Tehachapi Creek. Telegraph Hill was originally called Irvine Heights and became part of Tehachapi when it became part of Humboldt County. The creek's name has been changed several times over the years including Toquima Creek and finally Tehachapi River. The climate in Tehachapi varies depending on location but generally mild to hot summers with mild to cool winters year-round with occasional rain events. Most rainfall occurs during winter months which can lead to thunderstorms or heavy precipitation. There are frequent wildfires that burn throughout most of the year but these usually don't cause too much damage as they typically occur near agricultural areas or around timberline ridges; however there have been some devastating fires that have burned through entire townships including Atascadero in 2009 and Woolsey in 2002.

In 1912, a courthouse and jail were built and by 1928,Tehachapi had a population of 2,500 residents. World War II brought many challenges to Tehachapi; however, it continued to thrive during the war because of its plentiful resources (oil shale) which helped feed the military. After the war ended,TEHACHAPI GROWED EVEN MORE AS BUSINESSES OPENED UP IN THE AREA ALL ABOUT TEHACHAPI- FROM SMALL FARMERS TO LARGE ENTERTAINMENT FIRMS. TEHACHAPI TODAY HAS A POPULATION OF OVER 11,000 PEOPLE AND IS ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING CITIES IN CALIFORNIA..
Tehachapi was founded in 1848 by Jedediah B. Tejon and his wife, Mary Jane. It is located on the Kern River near the town of Mojave and is now a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 5,921 as of the 2010 census. The area that would become Tehachapi was part of Rancho Niguel land grant given to Juan Crespi in 1827. The first post office in the community was established in 1865. In 1876, Tejon donated an acreage east of town to the United States for use as a military reservation for Native Americans who had been removed from their traditional homelands near Yosemite National Park during California's Gold Rush period.
