Tehachapi is a small town in California and has been home to the Navy for over eighty years. The town was founded by Captain James K. Polk in 1848, and it became a naval base during World War II. The Navy left Tehachapi after the war and the town lost much of its importance until it regained some when the Naval Air Station Tehachapi was established in 1959. The Naval Air Station closed in 1996, but it reopened as an airport in 2006.
Tehachapi, California is located in Fresno County, California. The population was 179 as of the 2010 census. The town has a total area of 382 square miles and had a population of 9,711 in 2000. It is bordered by Kern County to the east, Mono County to the north, Madera County to the northwest and to the south it borders Chico Municipal Airport. Tehachapi Creek flows through the town. The Mexican land grant Rancho Tehachapi was given in 1847 to Felix Rodriguez, who renamed it after his birthplace -Tecaláhuacán (Tecate) -Chihuahua -México A post office called Tecaláhuacán was established in 1851, and remained operational until 1916. In 1881, part of Rancho Tehachapi became section 461 of Mineral Valley Township under control of Alameda County for $5 per acre (0.50 ha). In 1912 a large infusion of Anglo settlers arrived during what is now known as the California Gold Rush when John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort at Sutter's Mill on San Joaquin River near Stockton; they named their new settlement "Tehachapi" after General Perfecto Torrejon's brigade that fought during the Mexican–American War at Monterrey Bayou against United States Marines led by Commodore George Vancouver. In 1884 Mormon missionaries from Utah set up a adobe church near today's intersection of Canyon Road and Sierra avenues NW; they started baptizing Californians there in 1886 using water from Devils Lake which also served as their main source for irrigation purposes until 1913 when irrigation could be provided by an underground pipeline brought overland from Oroville Dam across Organ Pipe Creek

Tehachapi Valley is located in the San Joaquin Valley of California, and it was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The area became a part of Mexico after the Mexican-American War, and then it was annexed by the United States as part of California during the war. Tehachapi County was created in 1850, and it has since been one of the most populous counties in California. The valley is also home to several important ranching operations, as well as to a number of small towns and villages. The area around Tehachapi Ranch was first inhabited by the Yuman people. They lived there for centuries before moving westward into present-day Fresno County in search of better land. In 1847, Juan Bautista de Anza discovered gold near present-day Tehachapi Pass while exploring Arizona Territory. A group of American miners followed Anza's discovery, and they began mining at Chiricahua Creek near modern day Brownsville. By 1850, however, most American mining activity had stopped due to new discoveries in Nevada and Colorado. In 1852, John Cale founded what would become known as Cale's Rancho Santa Clara on what is now east side of town off State Route 160 between Mojave National Preserve and Sequoyah National Monument. The rancho consisted of about 350 acres (120 hectares) and produced corn, cattle, horses, sheep, llamas, alpacas and dogs for sale across central California. In 1898–99 Bureau of Land Management Surveyor J P Howell surveyed approximately 4 miles (6 km) north from where Cale's rancho stood along with other ranches owned by John Sutter within today's Amador County - this included over 6 square miles (15 km2). This survey formed much later portions parcels that comprise today’s Tehachapi Valley community areas including Humboldt Springs Village/Mount Shasta Regional Park on east side Road 97 about 2 mi/3 km south from today’s town center on highway 99A; North El Dorado Hills Regional Park including Grouse Mountain Village/Mount Shasta Regional Park on northeast corner Rd 7 ½ mi/1 ¼ km northwest from Highway 99A; Eastside Community School District #1 which includesToday’s City limits; White Sands Municipal Airport located 3 mi/5 km northeast fromcity limits
Tehachapi, California was founded in 1850 by Jedediah Smith and his party. The name is from the Apache word "tehachi" meaning "place where the sun sets." In 1852, the town was platted and named for Tehachapi Valley in Kern County. A post office operated at Tehachapi from 1850 until 1875.
