In 1853, Sheriff George Wright appointed Constable John Leland to serve as the town's first policeman. The job was a thankless one and required much effort on the part of Leland, who was often forced to ride atop his horse for long distances to attend to minor legal cases. Leland's successors were more fortunate. William Hennessey filled the position from 1868-1872, when he was succeeded by Lt. James Atherton Jr.. Hennessey's tenure saw significant progress in policing and community relations. He developed a system that used fingerprinting technology to identify suspects and created an efficient investigative infrastructure. During Lt. Atherton’s time, Tehachapi experienced some very hard times – during this time there were only four officers left in the department after Mayor Fenton closed all but one of the town’s five homes with taxes due on them because they could not find replacements for retired officers who had died or left service sooner than planned. In 1916, Lieutenant Alonzo Burt took over command of the department from Atherton and quickly made a name for himself as one of its most successful commanders ever. During his 12 years in office, Burt helped develop new methods of crime prevention including undercover operations and using artesian water supplies as dumping grounds for criminals during drought periods. Burt's successor became Deputy Chief Maurice Dillard in 1951 and led the department until his retirement in 1979; at that point it had grown to thirteen officers under Radcliffe Forbes (director). Forbes is credited with making major changes within the Police Department which included creating a SWAT team (now called "Special Weapons And Tactics") unit which operated out of their headquarters off State Route 460 between 1984-1991 while also developing computerized records management systems which are still being used today; reorganizing patrol units into divisions/ precincts across Tehachapi; implementing traffic control measures via sensors placed along local roadsides; increasing use of mobile devices within our departments' possession pursuant to state law governing how evidence may be accessed by law enforcement officials without any physical evidence being taken… these technological advancements have allowed us today[to] offer our citizens whatever type criminal justice services they might need without having to leave their homes."

The history of policing in Tehachapi, California dates back to the early 1800s. At that time, the area was part of Mexico and law enforcement was conducted by Spanish officers. In 1848, the United States acquired California from Mexico and started a process of building up its own government. The first American police officer in Tehachapi was named George Wickersham. He arrived in 1849 and began patrols around town. By 1850, Wickersham had developed a system for tracking criminals and he soon became known as one of the most successful American police officers ever hired. In 1853, American Indian Chief Manuel Cabeza de Vaca came to Tehachapi to try to stop white settlers from settling in the area. Cabeza de Vaca's followers were killed by local residents after they refused to leave because they thought they owned the land. This event led to increased tensions between Native Americans and settlers in Tehachapi. From this time on, law enforcement operations were conducted by Mexican officials instead of Americans. In 1865, General Armstrong replaced General James Halleck as commander of US forces in Southern California with Antonio López de Santa Anna as his replacement. Santa Anna had come to power following a military coup which overthrew Emperor Don Pedro Monttillero on December 12th, 1861. Santa Anna wanted revenge on those responsible for his overthrow and decided to start a crackdown on crime in Tehachapi specifically. As a result, crime rates soared throughout much of Los Angeles County during Santa Anna's rule – something that didn't happen under Halleck or Armstrong! By 1870, however, things had changed somewhat since Santa Ana's rule had been tumultuous and there was growing sentiment among people in Los Angeles County against him personally or with regards to specific policies he promulgated (e.g., prohibition). On October 3rd of that year – just four months after taking office – Santa Ana died suddenly at age 54 from complications caused by pneumonia while travelling through New Mexico Territory.) His death removed any possible challenger for control over Los Angeles County politics and handed over power facto into the hands of Big Ben himself...sorta! A competition quickly ensued within LA County's political leadership for who should succeedSanta Anna as governor; Ben eventually emerged victorious but only due to his large campaign contributions from influential business interests within LA County! After gaining control over Los Angeles County politics Ben turned his attention towards expanding it into what is now San Bernardino County - an ambitious goal given that San Bernardino would be completely surrounded byLA County!

Additionally, there are several shopping malls located within walking distance of the town center as well as restaurants and bars serving up local cuisine.
Tehachapi became a Mexican land grant in 1836. The area was part of the California Republic before becoming part of the United States in 1846. Rancho Tehachapi was granted to Juan Bautista Alvarado and his heirs in 1851. The rancho stretched from northeast Tehachapi County east to Bakewell and west to the Sacramento River. In 1909, it was split between two families, the Hargrave family and the Rankins family, who took over operations of both ranches until 1959.
