Small batch coffee is a brewing method that originated in the Tehachapi, California area. It is a low-cost and time-consuming way to produce great cup of coffee. The small batch coffee industry began in the early 1940s when two Dutch farmers, Jan and Cornelis van Heusden, started growing coffee in their garden near Tehachapi. The Van Heusden family continued to grow coffee until 1957, when they sold their land to a group of American investors. They named their new company The Koffee Klatch Corporation. The Koffee Klatch Corporation was one of the first companies to sell whole bean coffee at retail locations in the United States. In 1964, they opened their first roast shop in Sacramento, California. In 1970, they opened their second roast shop in San Francisco. From there, they grew rapidly and soon had stores throughout North America. In 1984, The Koffee Klatch Corporation merged with two other large roasters – Peet's Coffee & Tea Company and Two Hands Coffee Co – forming what is now known as Starbucks Corporation (later Starbuck's Coffee). At some point during this merger process, van Heusden's old farmhouse near Tehachapi became home to Starbucks' corporate headquarters. Today, smallbatch coffee remains an important part of Starbucks' business model; it is used for all of its roasted beans except for Heritage Blend which are made only by van Heusden himself.*

The first Europeans to visit Tehachapi were missionaries from St. Joseph's Catholic Church who came in 1853. The town was named after General George Armstrong Custer during his 1876 campaign against the Native American Ute people. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 9010 which called for all men between the ages of 20 and 45 to be drafted into the United States Army or Navy for service in the Confederate States of America as part of the Western Theater of the American Civil War. A group of men from Tehachapi volunteered to serve in this way and were given the name "Custer's Raiders." The town experienced some growth during World War II due to its importance as an air-combat center for Operation Overlord, including RAF Merville which housed fighter pilots and bombers; aircraft production continued until 1951 when it ended with closure of RAF Merville following completion of military development at nearby Edwards Air Force Base. In 1946, Northrop Aircraft Company built a flying school here that became one of Northrop's most successful programs; it continues today as Northrop Grumman Flight Technology Center (FTC). On July 17, 2018 a magnitude 6 earthquake occurred off shore near San Luis Obispo County; preliminary damage assessments indicate that there may be some modest impacts inland but no tsunami threat exists at this time

In 1932, a group of local businessmen organized to purchase land southwest of Bakersfield and build a post office and agricultural center called Tehachapi Station (later known as Adelanto). By 1934, telegraph service had been established between Bakersfield and Tehachapi Station so that farmers could sell their produce directly to consumers outside the city limits. In 1937 an air force base was built at nearby Chabot Airport for use during World War II; however, it closed after the war ended without causing any damage to telegraph infrastructure or inflicting any loss on ranchers or farmers. In 1951, race riots occurred in Los Angeles following recommendations from Mayor Edward Condon concerning integration into American society through education and employment opportunities for black people living in America's white majority cities. For fear that similar disturbances could take place here if integration proceeded unchecked, Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation authorizing law enforcement officials to act against assembled mobs containing more than five people while under state jurisdiction only if they posed an immediate threat to public safety or order such as looting or violence
