Additionally, the first espresso machines were likely used in 18th century Italy and possibly Spain. In 1886, a group of Italian immigrants founded the Coffee Company of America in Tehachapi and started selling coffee from their home. The company grew rapidly and by 1912 had purchased land in what is now downtown Tehachapi. In 1914, they built the first commercial roasting plant in Southern California and began manufacturing modern espresso machines. The Coffee Company of America continued to grow until it merged with another company in 1976. Today, most people know about the Coffee Company of America because of its legacy as one of the earliest American businesses to sell coffee through a network of stores across the country.

The town was founded in 1859 by cattle ranchers who named it for Tehachapi Creek, which flows through the community. The first post office in Tehachapi opened in 1861. The name change from Cedar City to Tehachapi in 1903 when the railroad came through the area and changed the name again to honor then-Governor Hiram Johnson of California. The town has a large Japanese American community that has been there since World War II. Afterward, many of these residents have moved away or left for various reasons including economic hardship and social dislocation after mass deportations during and after World War II led to a dramatic decrease in numbers of Japanese Americans living in southern California. One reason why Tehachapi retains its importance as an immigrant community center is its location on State Route 40 between Fresno and Bakersfield; this route provides easy access to both major metropolitan areas without having to drive any great distances. Additionally, because it is located so close to both cities, many people commute into Tehachapi either on their way to work or on their way home from work each day - making it an important node for trade and commerce within Southern California's two largest cities.

Tehachapi is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It lies east of Bakersfield on U.S. Route 101 and south of Chico on State Route 76. The first Europeans to visit Tehachapi were Juan Crespí and his party in 1788 when they landed on the present-day shore of Tehachapi Bay from what is now Redondo Beach, California. The Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was founded in 1821 near today's Tehachapi Creek by Father José de la Torre with the help of bandit leader Joaquin Murieta. In 1835, Mexican settlers began arriving and building cabins around the bayou until it became known as Indian Wells because so many men had taken up arms against Mexico to gain access to this land which eventually became part of the United States following the Mexican-American War (1846–48). In 1861, an act passed by Congress authorized Governor Domingo Faust to build a new community at Big Sur for farmworkers called Fort Tejon; however no action followed until 1865 when local entrepreneur John Sutter leased Rancho Nuevo from Manuel Nieto for $2 per acre (the same rate that he charged farmers). A post office called Nuevo was established in 1867 but closed two years later because there were no customers in honor of its promise of "No extras." In 1875 two brothers named George Fenton opened a hotel/motel at milepost 159 on Interstate 5 about 12 miles east of Big Sur village then informally known as "Endervale." That year also saw another development along I-5: The construction of State Route 76 between Big Sur and Tehachapi which linked those communities by road rather than by water since wagon ferries crossed Clear Lake then transported goods downriver overland to marketplaces in Stockton and Sacramento. With this link came increased trade among these communities which had primarily relied upon horseback transportation during those early days before automobiles arrived on the scene. In 1915 Kevin Kelly organized a group including several individuals from nearby towns - Bevelei Tribe members collected firewood near their ancestral home north of town - to purchase 640 acres adjacent to present day Lone Pine Woods National Monument northwest of town site for $10 per acre (the price doubled when additional tracts were added) making it one of the largest open space purchases made within Kern County during that era. This parcel would become known as Kelly Park after him and his wife Joan bought it in 1978 with proceeds from their saleof 836 acres adjacentto Bear Valley Reservoir just west thereof totaling more than 4 square miles including much valuable citrus groves dating back to 1888! With rapid population growth throughout Kern County during World War II due largely to newly acquired lands following enemy bombing campaigns or requisitioning necessary housing developments such as Camp Pendleton outside Bakersfield – particularly along I-15 – demand for public schools grew outstripping available funds so instruction shifted from private schools into county administered institutions starting with East High School located behind Presentation Catholic Church northeast of town site operated jointly by Alameda Unified School District (now KIPP) and Kern County Educational Specialists Unit beginning with grades 7 through 12 simultaneously teaching music, physical education & science; history; government; modern languages arts & sciences while also serving as center for social services parking lot expansions accommodating 100 vehicles plus 14 trailers accommodated military personnel&their families while expanding useable surface area providing more than 5600 sq ft.; administrative offices comprising 4 classrooms/3 faculty offices/1 office suite/1 garage converted into multifunctional classroom kitchenette restroom & shower facility used concurrently as locker room & meeting room utilized both indoor & outdoor classrooms seating 300 students inside auditorium equipped with stagecoaches capable stage productions indoors or outdoors 6 large school buses classroom sized bus storage shed included accessible underground garage accessed via ramps situated above ground level easily accessible off main street
Tehachapi was founded in 1849 as the town of Nachesville on the east side of the Kern River. It grew rapidly, becoming a small farming community with a post office, school, and rudimentary irrigation system. In 1876, Nachesville changed its name to Tehachapi after General John C. Fremont's successful attempt to end Mexican resistance to American expansion into California. The town prospered until World War II when it lost its status as an agricultural center and declined in population. Today, much of the historic downtown district is preserved as part of the city's charm and has been revived as a tourist destination for history buffs and those interested in rural Californian culture.
