The Temecula Air Force Base History Museum is a museum located at the Temecula Municipal Airport, in Temecula, California. The museum was founded in 1984 and is dedicated to the history of the Air Force Base in Temecula. It features artifacts from the base's history, as well as military aircraft and memorabilia from local air traffic controllers.
Temecula, California is a small town located in Riverside County, east of San Bernardino. The population was 8,326 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Riverside County and has been identified as a "second-largest" city by Forbes magazine. The name is derived from Temiculco Creek which flows through the community. The area that now makes up Temecula was first developed around 1849 by Spanish missionaries who were looking for a place to establish missions in what is now southern California. They named the area Temecula de la Jarilla or Temecula Mission Valley after one of their number, Diego Rivera, who had earlier founded Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico in Alhambra, California (now part of Los Angeles). A post office called Temecula was established in 1852 and remained operation until 1924. In 1893 the two towns merged to form one municipality with a population of 12,000 people. At this time Temecula became an agricultural center due to its location near other citrus groves and vineyards on the banks of Temiculco Creek. In 1916Temecula became incorporated as a city with a population over 25,000 people and continues to grow today with over 100 businesses operating within its limits including several large shopping malls along Interstate 10 outside of town. The current mayor is Jerry Dominguez and City Councilmember Darrell Steinberg sit on both chambers of the City Council which meets monthly except for July recess when it meets biennially.
The Air Force has a long and rich history of giving gifts to others. Gifts have been given in support of military operations, research, education, and other humanitarian causes. In 1948 the USAF established the Air Force Reserve Command to provide aircrews available for service in times of national emergency. The command was renamed the Air National Guard in 1957 and activated 1,500 military reservists. In 1980, the ANG became a full-time branch of the USAF andhtarized its insignia. Since its activation as an official branch of the USAF, ANG personnel have served in every corner of America and around the world. They have played an important role in maintaining our airspace, providing security within our borders, conducting humanitarian missions, and more.
Temecula, California is a small town located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County. The population was 382 at the 2000 census, down from 454 at the 1990 census. It is part of the Torrance–La Cañada Flintridge–Pico Rivera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Temecula was founded by Mexican immigrants in 1847 as Rancho Temecula. The name comes from Tehualtehuacán, or "the place where trees grow." In 1872, Rancho Temecula and its neighboring land were acquired by Captain John A. Hasse and his wife Anna Maria Kingsbury Hasse for $10,000. They named their new rancho after their father-in-law's home town in Ireland - Terelaghy on the Shannon Estuary - which they had been visiting every month since October 1861 when Captain Hasse became captain of HMS "Iphigenia". The first resident of Temecula was Antonio Gomez who arrived on July 9, 1874. By 1902 there were 10 businesses in town with a total population of 1,315 residents: 281 farmers, 581 ranch hands and 863 citizens. Farming was the primary economic activity until World War II when industry took over; today most people are engaged in local commerce and services such as agriculture (production), retail trade (stores), health care (medical services), recreation (spas) or engineering (new buildings). In 1912 Jock Mahoney opened what is now called Mahoney's Drug Store on Third Street near State Route 347 south of downtown; it became one of the earliest convenience stores west of Interstate 5. Two years later Harry Harkins established Harriman & Harkins Hardware on Main Street between Second and Third Streets; this store served as a post office from 1915 to 1924 before becoming an ammunition depot during World War I before returning to general merchandise operation in 1923. The first movie theater in town was built by Pee Wee King at Seventh Avenue and Broadway in 1911; it closed operations two years later because of financial difficulties caused by prohibition laws then being passed by Congress which made buying alcohol illegal within 100 miles of any law enforcement agency! The first gasoline station in town was built by Wm Gasson on First Street northwest of downtown about 1920; it closed about 1935 due to competition from other stations serving more rural areas within minutes' drive away. Today there are only three remaining gas stations operating within 100 milesof Temecula: one located east off US 101 near Corona del Mar Airport; one located west off US 101 just outside La Canada Flintridge; and one situated south off SR 349 inside City Park next to Riverside Regional Medical Center . After Prohibition ended with repeal by President Franklin D Roosevelt in 1933temecula experienced some rapid growth due to automobiles that had replaced stagecoaches as transportation methods for people moving between towns outside metropolitan areas throughout Southern California during those days however many people chose not to buy cars because they were afraid that if they did law enforcement would confiscated their horses or cattle that contributed substantially to local economy
The Temecula Valley was first settled by the Tongva people in the late 1800s. The valley was named for the Temescal mountain range which dominates it. In 1849, Juan Bautista de Anza chartered Rancho San Pedro y Santa Margarita, which included present-day Temecula and parts of Riverside County. In 1852, Mexico assumed control of California and began tosend settlers into what is now Temecula Valley. In 1864, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Californians to leave their homes and march towards Sonoma County to be registered as citizens. The majority of these Californians did not listen and continued to live in the Temecula Valley. By 1870, most of the people in the valley had left for various reasons including gold mining opportunities in Northern California or because they were fearful of new Mexican rule. By 1875, only a few thousand Mexicans remained in California while over 20 percent of Temecula's population consisted of Anglo Americans who had purchased land from Mexican farmers during this time period.
