Temecula, California is a small town in Riverside County, California. It is located about 25 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles and the county seat of Riverside. The population was 41,714 at the 2010 census. Temecula was founded in 1887 by Ferdinand and Emma Kern as a result of their land purchase from native Californians. The name means "Place where the trees grow." The Kerns were originally German immigrants who had come to Southern California looking for new opportunities. They started a small grocery store in what is now Temecula before moving to a larger business in 1903. From here they developed an agricultural empire that included more than 350 acres (160 hectares) of farmland and 12 processing plants that produced fruits, vegetables, milk products, shoes and other goods. In 1951 Temecula became part of Riverside County when it was created from portions of Los Angeles and Orange counties. The city's growth during the 1990s led to the development of several shopping malls including one near Interstate 10 called One America Plaza which opened in 1997. In 2003 Temecula voters passed Proposition 118 which designated the town's Main Street as an open-air pedestrian mall with sidewalks running perpendicular to each other for ease of access by all residents regardless of age or disability

In 1849, Temecula became an incorporated town under the name of Oakdale after General John C. Fremont's headquarters were located there. The first post office opened in 1853. By 1886, most of what is now Temecula had been developed as farmland and local mills closed down during the Panic of 1893 that followed America's entry into World War I. In 1923, Temecula hosted its first professional American football game when Pacific Coast League (PCL) teams Los Angeles Rams and San Diego Padres played against each other at Anaheim Stadium. Today, Temecula is home to two major league sports teams: the Dodgers (the former Lakers) and Padres (the latter Padres). The city also has a significant number of college students who attend universities within close proximity including Claremont McKenna College and Pomona College; both schools are located just outside downtown Temecula on Interstate 705 east of Highway 166
The first Europeans to visit what is now Temecula County were the Spanish in 1769. In 1821, Temecula became a part of Mexico and was named Ciudad Juárez. The United States acquired it as part of the Mexican-American War in 1848. The town of Temecula grew up around the military post at Rancho Santa Margarita and began trade with neighboring counties. On December 22, 1850, the name of the town changed from Ciudad Juárez to Temecula when its citizens ratified a referendum approving the change. By 1860, Temecula had a population of about 1,500 people and was an important center for agriculture and commerce on the San Diegans’ southern border. In 1865, General Antonio López de Santa Anna's forces attacked Yuma County hoping to defeat Ulysses S. Grant's army leading to America's Civil War. Lieutenant Colonel James Houghtaling led a force composed primarily of soldiers from Los Angeles into Yuma County looking for Santa Anna but were instead successful in capturing him. In 1875, mining company prospectors discovered gold near present-day Fillmore and decided to establish their claim there rather than move alongriver because they did not want competition from other miners operating farther upstream on San Bernardino Valley flooring hillsides then). A small community soon sprang up around this new discovery called Fillmore after fillers who carted away bits of gold nuggets off the hilltop during prospecting trips (the original Fillmore still stands today).
