After Mexican independence from Spain, a rancho called Rancho Viejo was granted to José Joaquin Mendez in 1821. In 1852, surveyor Henschel C RAIDZ signed a plat for Rancho Viejo which included present day Temecula Valley. The town of Viejo began growing up around this grant and development continued until after World War II when most of the military base, including many buildings that still stand today were closed down and destroyed during wartime production.
