The Temecula Valley is located in the southern California region and has been inhabited by the Ohlone people since before 4000 BC. The area that now makes up Temecula was first explored by Spanish settlers in 1776, and it was named after Temecula Creek. In 1802,Temecula became part of Mexico City, and the Mexican government granted land to American settlers in 1835. This led to a series of conflicts between the U.S. and Mexican governments over who should control this land, and as a result, most of the valley became part of the Dwight-Lincoln National Monument in 1915. The town of Temecula was founded on what is now North Main Street in 1865, and it rapidly grew into one of Southern California’s largest cities during its early years. In 1907, Temecula voters passed a resolution asking for annexation by Los Angeles County, but this request was denied because Los Angeles had already annexed much more territory than Temecula could handle. In the 1940s and 50s, Temescal Valley underwent several changes that have left their mark on today’s community. One such change came when oil exploration began in earnest in nearby Kern County; as a result, many businesses relocated to the valley from other parts of southeastern California. This growth also led to development along North Main Street; while some businesses remain here today, others have moved away or been replaced by modern-day versions of their predecessors. Another major event occurred during this time whenTemescal Valley hosted its first annual Strawberry Festival; at that time, it was one of only a few events held in southern California which attracted large crowds (the festival still takes place annually).
