Temecula, California is a small town in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 23,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Temecula" comes from the Tongva people and means "place where there are many fruits." The first Europeans to visit this area were José Gabriel Báez and his brother Antonio de la Cruz on November 14, 1769. They found a small stream and marked it with their flag as they traveled north up the San Joaquin River. A mission built by Father Ferrer in 1823 called Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish was located near present-day Temecula Boulevard east of Interstate 10; however, no church was ever erected there. In 1873, Captain Charles Waddell discovered oil in what would become Temecula while hunting stags on Rancho Seco Road east of Sebastopol (now south of I-10). He leased 640 acres (248 hectares) from Don Enrique Villalobos for $5 per acre ($/ha) with an option to purchase additional land at $10 per acre ($/ha). In 1875 Waddell drillers discovered gas wells and produced oil until 1911 when production stopped because of high costs associated with new technology. The wellhead has been preserved at El Cajon Museum along with artifacts related to that period such as tools used to explore the well site including a hand drill bit which still exists today! In 1880s local residents established Amalgamated Copper Mines Company doing business as Humboldt Copper Mines but it failed within 5 years due to strikes by workers over wages and other issues. By 1905 all copper mines in southern California had closed down due to lack of ore or competition from other industries like aluminum smelting or Refinery production etc., leaving only those here in Riverside County open for about 40 years? present day Amalgamated Copper Mines company is now known as Republic Mining & Metallurgical Corporation
