It is situated on the Temecula River and is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Temecula begins with Spanish settlement in 1769 as Rancho Viejo de la Luz del Norte Mexican land grant to José Francisco Armijo y Zárate. In 1821 Temecula became part of the United States when Mexico ceded it to America via Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The town name originated from Spanish "temer" meaning "to be hot." The first post office was established in 1874 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1916 Temecula incorporated as a city under state law and adopted its current name. Temecula, California is located in the Central Valley of California and has a population of over 154,000. The area that would later become Temecula was first home to the Tongva people. They lived on the valley floor between Mount Diablo and County Rd. 128 for thousands of years. In 1845, Spanish land buyers discovered gold in the area and began moving away from their Native American neighbors to establish what would become Temecula. The town was founded on July 26th, 1846 by Major José María Morelos with assistance from General Antonio Valencia. On January 15th, 1861, after Mexican Americans had fought in many battles during the American Civil War, they were granted citizenship by President Abraham Lincoln as part of his Reconstruction policy. The town became an agricultural center with a large wine industry and other crops such as almond orchards soon followed suit. The city started growth when it was incorporated on December 2nd, 1912 as part of Temecula Municipal Borough. By 1920 it had reached its present size with over 100 businesses and 1,500 residents. After World War II both the oil production and agricultural sectors declined but new development including shopping malls and apartment complexes sprang up around it in the 1970s and 1980s resulting in a rapid population growth which still persists today along with intense economic development thanks to tourism which has helped drive local businesses into profitability again since 2000
