Temple City is located in Riverside County, California, within the San Bernardino Mountains. The population of Temple City was estimated to be 452 at the 2010 census. The town was named after Mount Zion, which is located in Jerusalem. The first permanent settler in what would become Temple City was David Purdy who built a cabin on the east side of what is now First Street in 1859. A year later, he and his wife started a small grocery store on Second Street near Mountain Avenue. In 1866, Purdy bought 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of property north of First Street from John Sanger for $400. He donated this land to the town for use as an public square and cemetery. In 1886, J.P., prominent banker and real estate developer in Riverside County founded the Bank of America building on Third Street between Central Avenue and Hillside Avenue which remains a major local center today with over 150 businesses including several banks and six churches. One street that still bears his name - Third Street - runs through temple city today connecting many business districts around downtown with one central location: Third & Market Streets where most large retailers locate today including Macy’s Department Store (1910), Sears Roebuck & Co.(1914), Kmart(1972), JCPenney(1999), Bed Bath & Beyond(2015). The growth of downtown Temple City during the 1920s and 1930s led to new development across 3rd St., Marketplace Blvd., 2nd Ave., E Valley Rd., Glenview Rd., Canyon Rd., Spring Rd., N Main St./Market St./E Canon Dr./Foothill Dr./Valley View Dr.: The commercial areas extending into Glendale Heights increased rapidly from Tempe's Cotton Patch district westward along I-15 spanning all or parts of 8th Ave SW to include much newer high-rise housing developments as well as extensive shopping malls (e.g.: Safeway; US Airways; Mastercard Plaza;ITT Towers); light industrial sites such as Ford Motor Company plants south of I-15 on Valley View Road between Highland Park Boulevard eastward to Sunland Village; numerous sites occupied by military installations during World War II including Naval Station Lemelson just outside downtown; more recent developments taking place primarily northwest along I-215 with improvements such as underground parking garages at Hwy 190W exit #1 off I-215 next to Staples Center before terminating at I-215W exit #2 off Interstate 215 opposite Staples Center - making Temple City one major metropolis located adjacent only proximate thereto by means both expressways while also encompassing nearly all other neighborhoods served by main freeways serving Los Angeles county metropolitan area: providing easy access throughout its core urban area for residents commuting daily into larger cities east or west Of Los Angeles County
