Temple City is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in the county and its metropolitan area. The city is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name "Temple City" first appeared on maps in 1887 when it was given to an unincorporated community by H.C. Belden who surveyed the area for Government land that would be used for military purposes during World War II. The name stuck and Temple City became one of Southern California's most well-known cities with its prestigious universities, shopping malls, and nightlife; however, its economy has been struggling since suburban growth began to spread through Orange County in the late 1990s. In recent years there have been efforts made by Mayor James Kapp to revitalize Temple City as a center of culture and commerce within Southern California's expanding suburbs but these have not had much success so far; Temple City now ranks as one of Southern California's poorest cities according to a study done by Forbes magazine in 2011. In January 2013 it was announced that former USC quarterback Matt Barkley would become the new mayor of Temple City effective January 1st, 2013 after being elected as a Republican candidate against incumbent Artie Seibel Jr.. In 1886 prospectors named John Crouch discovered gold near what is now downtown Temple City while working on developing Rancho San Vicente de las Flores into an agricultural holdings which they named "Rancho La Brea". Gold fever drove many people from this region during 1887-1888 due to lack of water supplies available from underground sources along with harsh weather conditions caused by severe winter snowspack drills (upwards of ), resulting in extensive mining operations including two huge gold mines: Don Pedro and Cananea although very little gold was ever found at either mine other than some small nuggets that were sold at public auctions off town streets before 1850 when ranchos were placer deposits). Temple City, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,619 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest city in Kern County and the second-smallest city east of Los Angeles. According to the United States Census Bureau, Temple City has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4 km²), all of it land. The first permanent settler in what would become Temple City was James Irvine who arrived on October 16, 1853. In 1854 John Laughlin founded the First National Bank there and named it after his friend and fellow silver miner William Hancey. A post office called Irvine was opened in 1855; it was discontinued in 1865 because no letters were received from people living there for three years. The town's name came about when one man asked another how he should address himself while living near Morongo Pass: "How do you suppose we ought to call ourselves? - If I may ask - Our town might be called ' Templesville' but I think not many people would agree with that title." A group of men who had emigrated from Wales gathered around Jens Jensen on January 8, 1860 to formed The Welshmen's Association and elected him as their first president. The group also voted to build a chapel which they named "The Welshman's Chapel" and began construction soon afterward on July 6th 1860 under the direction of local stonemason Edward Crouch Jr.. The chapel finally opened its doors on December 12th 1861 following much public celebration including anAddress by President Abraham Lincoln during his visit to Southern California that same year! During World War II, Temple City became home to over 1,000 American military personnel who lived or worked onsite at various installation sites throughout Kern County. Many residents helped contribute towards war efforts such as manufacturing munitions or working adjacent farms while others served as firefighters or air raid wardens during wartime conditions.
