It is located about 8 miles east of Bakersfield and 18 miles north-northwest of grapeseed country. The first permanent settler in what is now Temple City was J.D. Wheeler in 1876. In 1910, the town had a population of just over 100 people and was named after Philadelphia's Temple University. It became an incorporated town in 1933 and enjoyed some prosperity during the years following World War II as builders erected homes on largeanches surrounding the then-new town center. However, economic decline began to set in during the 1970s with a decrease in manufacturing jobs throughout Kern County and elsewhere; Temple City's only major industry until recently has been agriculture (a focus since it has no major shopping or other services). The community experienced significant growth starting up around 2000 when AEMCO bought a majority interest in several local businesses including agricultural dealership Pucker Ranch Feeder & Slaughterhouse, which helped to generate new business activity that continues to this day.
