Temple City is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 16,895 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1875 by Latter-day Saint pioneers and arrived on the turn of the 20th century as a small town near the corner of Depot Road and Prospect Avenue. It became an incorporated city in 1907 and annexed by Riverside on January 1, 1912. Temple City has long been known for its agricultural production and independent spirit, which has led to it being one of the most agriculturally diverse cities in California. The first permanent settler in what would become Temple City was Lorenzo Cranch on November 15, 1875. He erected a cabin near what is now Depot Road and Prospect Avenue. In 1876, Wm Fenton built a cabin about two miles (3 km) east of where today's temple stands on land leased from John Sitton and others. In 1877, Jno Hales donated 160 acres (61 hectares) of his Rancho Mirage property to the LDS Church for use as an Agricultural Experiment Station (AES). Reverend George Quesada served as president of this station from its inception until his death in 1916. In 1880–81 Leland Stanford donated 220 acres (100 hectares) east of where present day Temple City sits to Templesville through his venture founded called "Redwood Valley". Most importantly however, Brigham Young purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) west of Templesville from Leland Stanford for $10 per acre ($2 million total). This donation allowed Mormons living outside Salt Lake City to live close enough to build temples without traveling too far or having their crops destroyed by Muslims who were hostile towards Mormons. "This grant also means that within five years after [Young] made this gift," wrote church historian David Atherton,"the whole region northward around Los Angeles had become Mormon." temple construction began immediately upon receipt of this donation with Elder Orson Pratt leading construction crews northeast from Redwood Valley across Amboy Creek into Modoc County . Construction continued intermittently throughout much of 1890 due to various problems with location including rugged terrain along Amboy Creek; lack of water access; bad weather during winter; financial constraints." According to LDS Church historian Dallin H Oaks: "[Ptte.] Orson Pratt directed teams southward along Route 66 past Menifee Hills onto less traveled sections of Route 66 just west-northwest of Redwood Valley so that goods could be hauled overland ." These new routes facilitated easier movement between Salt Lake City and Nauvoo while also providing opportunities for local farmers to sell their products directly to temple visitors insteadof going through local merchants
