Temple City, California is a city in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 84,435 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Fernando Valley. Temple City is located on the eastern edge of downtown Los Angeles and extends into Ventura County to the north and east. To the south it borders Riverside County and has a small area in Orange County. The town was founded by Mormons in 1871 as part of a move from Nauvoo, Illinois to what would become Los Angeles. The original name for the community was Ephraimite Village because Mormon leaders felt that they were being left out of Great Britain's growing electrical industry. The town became known as Temple City after meeting with President George Washington at Mount Vernon in 1799 to petition for land east of Pasadena which would become Los Angeles. In 1887, Brigham Young organized his church's new settlement at Springdale on Canoga Park Boulevard within sight of downtown L.A., thus giving birth to what would become known as Springdale Heights neighborhood today adjacent to Hollywood Studios (now Walt Disney World). The first post office opened in Temple City on December 11th, 1888 under the name "Moses". It closed on January 4th, 1889 due to high postage rates associated with mail service through Downtown L.A.. In 1907 there were only 167 residents living in what is now South Temple City; most lived scattered around nearby Arcadia Hills and Carsonview Manor neighborhoods or inside Downtown LOS ANGELES proper where some own buildings still stand including: Pico House (the first building built in South TempleCity), Kimball House Annex (built 1911 adjoining Pico House), Waugh & Sons Building (1914), Masonic Lodge #6 Building (1920s) Holy Cross Catholic Church also 1912-1972 siting just southwest side of present day Staples Center playing fields across street from old Air Force Base until 1984 when it moved too close - finally demolished 1993) while North TempleCity had more than 1000 residents before 1900 when Oil Refinery burned down(and all records destroyed). By 1910 there were over 2000 people living here according to Census data Some notable early businesses/personality include: lumberman Jenson & Elder Richards who operated their sawmill right next door to schoolhouse; real estate agent Harry Denny who sold lots near Staples Center; banker Condon who built Queen Anne style home near corner Of Fairfax Avenue & Academy Street; Ulysses S Grant birthplace home& museum located off Gower Street NW which opened 1976
