Temple City, California is a small city in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. Temple City is part of theeno-Summit Junction Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Temple City was James Irvine in 1870. It developed as a small town on the edge of Mono Lake due to its location near water resources and its access to railroad transportation. By 1880, it had a post office, two schoolhouses and around forty residents. The town grew rapidly due to irrigation projects and new mining claims brought by prospectors during the early 20th century. During World War II, Temple City became one of the few American cities located within Japan's military occupied Zone of Japan (known as "Tokyo-Yoshima"). Japanese Americans were interned there from 1942 until 1945 under conditions that included forced labor and restricted civil rights. Many residents who lived in or frequented downtown Temple City protested against the internment camp policies and helped organize resistance movements such as the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL). After World War II ended, much of downtown temple city was destroyed in a fire which began on February 14, 1946 and continued for three days burning down blocks of buildings until it was put out by firefighters using high pressure hoses

The town was originally named Saugus, but it was changed to Temple City due to its location within the city of Los Angeles. The first post office opened in Temple City on December 5, 1879. In 1886, the town had a population of 508 residents and by 1907, it had grown to 1,011 residents. The community experienced some growth during World War II as many Jews came to work in the munitions factories near LA. After the war ended, Temple City began to decline and by 1970 had only 152 residents remaining.
