Grant for help with their relocation but he refused because he felt that it would be unconstitutional for Utah residents to leave their state and live on Indian territory under United States jurisdiction In 1851, Brigham Young issued an order reversing his earlier decision and ordering all Mormon settlers within San Bernardino County to start calling themselves "Temple Cityites." The name stuck and Temple City became one of Southern California's most popular tourist destinations due to its natural beauty as well as its thriving economy which relied on agriculture and mining until recently. During World War II, Temple City played host to many military installations including Fort Irwin (now known as Disneyland) which served as a training ground for troops stationed in Northern California; Asiatic Air Force Station Northrop Field (now known as Norwalk); Castle Air Force Base; and Marine Corps Reserve Center Simi Valley which housed stores and barracks for Marines awaiting deployment overseas The city faced some social unrest during the 1960s when two African American men were killed by white supremacists while walking through downtown; however, those protests quickly subsided once tensions between races began declining nationally
