Temple City is a city located in San Bernardino County, California. It was founded on November 3, 1881 by permanent residents of the Rancho Temescal Settlement. The first post office and school were opened in 1882. In 1907, the city was named after Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The population of the city increased from 2,500 to 30,000 during World War II; however, the war led to a decrease in population and business due to military service and other demands on the local economy. The population reached its current level of 20,000 people in 2000. The history of Temple City began with some pioneers who set out from San Bernardino County for what would become Temple City. These early settlers were Norvell Baker and his brother-in-law George Witherspoon (the father of actress Constance Bennett) who set up shop on land that they had purchased from Jens Jensen for $8 per acre (when it was still part of Rancho Temescal). In 1881 those initial settlers erected a log cabin which served as their first town hall; later that year they also built a frame building which became their first schoolhouse. In 1907, when small villages like Yuma and Indio started sprouting up around nearby Claremont Hills – towns that had been founded by Mormon Pioneers following their exodus from Nauvoo Illinois – Temple City decided it needed its own municipality or village government so that it could compete effectively with these growing communities. Accordingly, on December 12th of that year – just two weeks after becoming an official community – the citizens of Temple City voted unanimously to adopt a Town Charter incorporating all aspects necessary for municipal government including: election day polling places (sixteen short years later this would be replaced by an open voting process), meeting place (a large lot adjoining Third Street between First and Second Streets), fire protection district (temporarily created until another building could be erected on First Street near Park Avenue), police department (!), cemetery (!), library (!) and assessor’s office! That same year construction began on what would become Church Street – one block south of Third Street where many temple services took place until 1908 when new facilities were built at Bowers Road across the street eastwards towards Claremont Hills which continued to serve as our main cultural center until well into the 21st century! Early businesses included groceries store(s) operated by C H Smith & Son; general mercantile store operated by A G Brown & Sons; bakery operated by John Fenton Richards & Son; carpenter shop operated by E R Smeaton & Sons; hotel(s) managed by Matson Hotels Incorporated - three buildings survive today including Hotel de Paris #1 now used as apartments/condos#2 now used as offices/#3 now known as The Masonic lodge! After World War I ended there was significant growth in employment opportunities within the local manufacturing sector with companies such as Ford Motor Company relocated to nearby Claremont Hills while other regional companies such as Bryant-Denny Manufacturing Co., Southern Pacific Railroad Corporation and United States Rubber Company established themselves hereabouts throughout much of the 1920s through 1940s . This period saw growth not only for our small town but also for our adjacent agricultural sector which prospered thanks to irrigation systems established hereabouts during this time period . Increases in joblessness during this time period did not lead to any major reductions or decreases inresidential development however some properties did see increases such as Presbyterian Hospital (#2) constructed 1909-1910 followed shortly thereafter by strong commercial real estate development spearheaded primarily by Louis Bourgeois who developed many iconic apartment complexes such as Talbot House/Arts District/Market Square etc.. However despite steady economic progress over these decades downtownmorphs gradually into more upscale areas characterized notably since 1970’s thru 1980’s thru 1990’s thru 2000’S Mostly Downtown area has experienced rapid gentrification although some lower income areas have fared better than others
