The Coast Guard gift history in Thousand Oaks, California began with the establishment of the Coast Guard Station at Point Lobos in 1871. The station was used to provide defense against piracy and other threats to maritime safety. As time passed, more and more functions were dedicated to the Coast Guard including law enforcement, search and rescue, and coastal rescue. In 1912, the Coast Guard Station was transferred from Point Lobos to its present location at Harbor City Naval Shipyard. This relocation allowed for increased training opportunities for marine officers and contributed to the rise of the Coast Guard as a major security force on our nation's coasts. In 1935, it was decided that a new Command Center would be needed on the grounds of Harbor City Naval Shipyard so that unified command could be exercised across all branches of the service. The new Command Center was built and named after Commodore Emmett J. McMahon who had been instrumental in leadingthe buildup of the Coast Guard during World War I. Commodore McMahon's leadership helped make America safe by providing leadership and resources required for Operation Neptune's Spear which destroyed an enemy naval base off Korea1). After Commodore McMahon's death in 1945, his successor Rear Admiral David Farragut assumed control of the command center shortly before his death in 19482). With Rear Admiral Farragut leadingthe way, there has never been a question as to how effectivelycommandingtheCoastGuard has grownandchangedovertime-froma manpower-intensiveoperationtoaworldwideforcewithassetsandresponsibilities far beyondthoseofjustone locality3). Tenthousand Oaks, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It was founded on October 25, 1907 by George C. Marshall and his wife Alice Bryant Marshall. The population was 97,645 at the 2010 census. The great majority of the people living there are Americans who have come to live in Southern California for its sunny weather, Mediterranean atmosphere, and rich history. The City of Thousand Oaks is located in the Santa Monica Mountains foothills about 30 minutes east of downtown Los Angeles on Ventura Boulevard between SR 133 and SR 91. It is bordered by Burbank to the north-northwest and Glendale to the south-southwest. According to 2010 United States Census Bureau estimates, the city has a total area of , all land. The first Europeans saw what they thought were mountains when they landed at Pico de la Mirada Beach on November 14, 1769 according to Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo CEFAD#2m who wrote “There appear today upon our coast two peaks which I estimated at six leagues high: one appears more than three leagues distant from us; it evidently reaches unto San Pedro Point” he named it Monterey Hill after Captain Francisco de Miranda y Arellano whose ship had anchored there five days earlier after sailing from Spain with supplies for Mission San Gabriel Arcangeles (now part of Downtown Los Angeles). On October 25th 1907 George C Marshall met Mrs Alice Bryant Marshall while driving down Ventura Boulevard near her home corner store called The Two Rivers when they decided that this community would be called Thousand Oaks because it had only 40 residents then and their families lived scattered around Westwood Village then Simi Valley then Baldwin Hills now Rosie Park etc etc etc…..and so it became….In honor of Mrs A BMarshall as well as my grandmothers many town meetings we held back here at home over several weeks before finally naming it thousand Oaks proper…… Many people came before me such as Johnny Appleseed (may he rest in peace) or Harry Byrd Sr., both US Senators from Virginia (1918-1921) or even Henry Ford himself who donated land for what is now Grand Park… Mr H Ford actually started construction on his new factory just across the street from where I am writing this! It wasn’t until 1920 when Arno Schwartz arrived that development really began with him buying much of what is now Northridge Shopping Center from Eastern Electric Company including most notably Sears Roebuck & Co which opened its first store here December 12th 1920 along with Wilbur Ross Inc which built a large warehouse next door soon followed by Kmart which opened November 3rd 1923 also becoming one of the first big box stores in America! The United States Coast Guard was formed on May 16, 1790, with the purpose of protecting America's coasts from attack by foreign powers. One of the first gifts given to the Coast Guard was a flagstaff and crossbow. These were donated by Captain John Smith and his friend, Sir Walter Raleigh. In 1853, Commander Cornelius Vanderbilt gave 50 flags to be mounted on a single pole at Governors Island in New York City. This was followed by a gift of 20 boats in 1861. In 1923, Commandant James Wickersham donated an icebreaker named HMCS Canadensis (L7) to the Coast Guard. This vessel became one of the busiest in the Coast Guard's history and helped reduce crime on America's coasts.

The City Council decided to move from its original location on the San Fernando Valley to make way for development in what is now Thousand Oaks. In 1923, Downtown Thousand Oaks was built and quickly became one of Southern California's most popular urban areas. In the 1930s, during World War II, Thousand Oaks produced many top-tier military personnel who helped contribute to California'sWar effort including General Leslie Groves and Admiral Chester Nimitz. Thousands Oaks also played an important role during the Cold War with its large population of nuclear scientists and engineers. After the war, downtown experienced a period of revitalization which included the construction of new businesses and residences along with an increase in cultural events and programming. Beginning in the late 1990s, however, downtown started to experience growth at a much slower pace than elsewhere in town due to increasing development pressures from suburbanites who were looking for more space for their homes and businesses outside of town limits. Today, downtown Thousand Oaks is still one of Southern California's most vibrant neighborhoods with a strong commercial base that supports arts programs as well as numerous nightlife venues including The Roxy Theatre (home theater), Regal Cinemas Hollywood Distribution Center (theaters), The AceCenter (a mixed use complex) as well as numerous restaurants including TGIFridays Chinese cuisine restaurant Dragon Inn BBQ & Pizza while also featuring several high-end boutiques such as Saks Fifth Avenue or Neiman Marcus department store located near Interstate 10 just south of downtown area known locally simply as "Downtown". Additionally there are numerous parks located throughout central Thousand Oaks providing ample recreational opportunities for residents both young children and adults alike while also landing some major league sports events like Major League Soccer games at nearby LA Galaxy stadium or hosting NCAA Division I basketball tournaments at nearby UCLA Bruins arena annually which attracts thousands of visitors each year not only from within town but also from surrounding communities such as Northridge or Ontario Hills which have since annexed portions of neighboring cities
