In 1901, the city of Thousand Oaks was founded by George Armstrong Custer and his family. The first white settler in the area was Alfred Iverson, who arrived in 1887. In 1893, Protestant Episcopal bishop John Green purchased land northwest of downtown for a new religious station called the Westminster Abbey Missionary Baptist Church. The church grew rapidly and soon had a congregation of over 500 people. At the same time, other churches were founded in nearby Claremont and Menlo Park. By 1906, Thousand Oaks had a population of over 10,000 people. In 1912, the city was renamed Thousand Oaks after General George Smedley Doolittle when he became superintendent of military aviation at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio. Over the years there have been several major changes to the cityscape: 1) The construction of Interstate 5 in 1970 improved transportation access to Thousand Oaks; 2) More than 1 million people moved into the city during its heyday between 1960 and 1980; 3) A variety of businesses have opened up throughout its history including Checkerboard Books & Comics (now Barnes & Noble), Microsoft's Byte Shop (later known as Frye's Electronics), and Toys "R" Us; 4) Many homes have been replaced with office buildings or other high-rise structures; 5) A number of parks have been created within walking distance of many residents' homes; 6) There is now an active nightlife scene with restaurants and bars located near popular shopping areas like Westlake Village mall and North Hollywood Boulevard
