Thousand Oaks, California is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 66,675 at the 2010 census. It is the seventh-largest city in Los Angeles County and the second-largest city in Ventura County after Carson City. The area that now makes up Thousand Oaks was first settled by Mission Indians in 1776 as Rancho Santa Fe de los Caballeros. The town of Thousand Oaks was founded on November 14, 1887 by William Ladd and his wife Julia Tenney Ladd as a result of their purchase of land from Pico Rivera interests. The original name for the town was "Lonely Grove". A post office called Lone Grove was established in 1892 and changed its name to Thousand Oaks on October 24, 1903. In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt delivered a speech at Bancroft Park which mentioned how much he liked Thousand Oaks and its rich history. This led to an increase in business activity around Lone Grove due to tourists coming to see Roosevelt's homeplace while visiting Los Angeles County. By 1912, construction had begun on what would become the then largest shopping center west of Chicago when it opened its doors - Highland Heights Shopping Center - with anchor stores Sears Roebuck & Company and Jovanovich's Camera Shop among others. Railroad tracks were laid down just east of Highland Heights Shopping Center creating an open-air mall that became popular with locals and visitors alike for over 50 years until it closed down in 2000 amid community concern about railway noise
