The city of Thousand Oaks, California was founded in 1887 by brothers George and Andrew Irvine. The area now known as Thousand Oaks was long part of the Rancho Santa Anita Mexican land grant given to Juan Bautista Alta from 1798 to 1836. After California gained its independence from Mexico in 1848, the rancho passed into private hands and was sold to American settler James Irvine in 1857. In 1865, James Irvine donated the tract of land that would become Thousand Oaks, making it one of Orange County's first towns. In 1888, the name change to Thousand Oaks after a donation by General Sam Houston.
