Thousand Oaks, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 212,713 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Los Angeles County after Carson City and it is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in North America. The area now known as Thousand Oaks was first settled by Native Americans who called it Noche Buena (Good Night). The town's name comes from Rancho San Rafael de Asis, which was given to it by Mexico in 1821 as part of Alta California grant. The first post office opened in 1827 and the first white settler arrived in 1839. In 1850, Avis Burns founded what would become Western Electric Telephone Company here. In 1860, when California became a state, Thousand Oaks became its capital. In 1916–17 while serving as Mayor of Los Angeles City Councilman Harry Chandler proposed that build an airport on what is now Ventura Boulevard just east of downtown Los Angeles to serve the growing population of Southern California. He also suggested that this airport be named for him and his wife Edith Jane Birdhill Chandler (1863–1946), daughter of lawyer/builder Prentice Birdhill and his wife Jennie Clayton Hunt (1865–1942).
