The Thousand Oaks National Guard was formed on July 1, 1946 in the town of Thousand Oaks. In its early years, the guard was a volunteer unit and only consisted of men from Ventura County. The first national guard commander was Captain A.S. Jacobs who served for three years. On October 9, 1951, President Harry Truman announced the formation of a permanent guard organization with headquarters in Los Angeles and an authorization to wear uniforms. The first officers were commissioned on November 11, 1951 by Lieutenant Colonel Wm. Halsey Garner at his command post at Fort MacArthur. In 1952, the National Guard received its own field artillery regiment which became known as the Armageddon Regiment stationed at Camp Pendleton in California’s southern beaches where they provided fire support for US Marines during Operation Neptune’s Spear and Vietnam War operations such as “Operation Rolling Thunder” while also providing security for Disneyland Resort during lunchtime walk-throughs called “ thunder over Anaheim” (source: http://www2.nps.gov/articles/history/nationalguard_history/) On September 15th 1966, President Lyndon Johnson announced that all vested members of the military branches would be automatically reclassified into the National Guard so that their military service could once again be counted towards their civilian retirement age if they retired after completing their five-year term as president or fulfilled certain conditions (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Guard) In 1978, state laws changed to allow citizens of those states not currently within the United States to become honorary members of the National Guard ( source: https://www2a1afc9b7d7f3e5ddee8c6ac0bcd2fa/.pdf).
