Thousand Oaks, California is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 33,675 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Los Angeles County and second most populous city in the United States after New York City. The name of Thousand Oaks comes from its then-rarity as a location for citrus orchards and other agriculture, which led to its current moniker of "The Orchard City". The first Europeans to visit what is now Thousand Oaks were Spanish explorers who traveled through this area on their way tofound Rancho Cucamonga. In 1836, two ranchers named George and John Chappell bought 5 square miles (13 km2) of land at the intersection of Ventura Boulevard and Third Street for $5 per acre (1/6th mi²). This area became known as Rancho Cucamonga. In 1881, local developer George Hirsch built a small house on Palos Verdes Peninsula for himself and his wife Anna Maria Nye. After Hirsch's death in 1907, his widow continued to live there until her death in 1951. She bequeathed her home and all its contents to the townspeople of Thousand Oaks when she died without children. On July 17th 1914, during World War I munitions workers from nearby factories went on strike at Love Field airfield over pay issues with American Motors Corporation; soon afterwards they rioted across America against war inflationary policies by President Wilson’s administration (and later by Franklin D Roosevelt).
