Thousand Oaks is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 176,651 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Ventura County after Santa Paula and Oxnard. The first people to live in what is now Thousand Oaks were the Tongva Indians. They arrived here about 1,000 years ago and names such as Tongva Point and Indian Hills may be found on old Spanish maps of this area. In 1824, Jesse L. Hahn purchased Rancho Cucamonga from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $1 million dollars. He renamed it Thousand Oaks after his family's home town of Oakville, Ontario (now Toronto). At that time, there were only 400 residents living in the entire county! A half century later, in 1882, John Sibley put up a sod wall to build his ranch which included part of today's downtown area and started calling it "Hollywood." Many people who grew up here say that if it weren't for Hollywood we would have no idea how populous our city has become over the last 150 years or so! On July 15th 1886 – three days before America got its independence from Great Britain – a crowd of nearly 20 thousand people gathered at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to watch Niles Eldredge race across the finish line in an event known as the LA Times Cup Racehorse Showcase race! This was one of many events that took place during those early days when horse racing was just starting to take off! The original course around these parts ran down Sepulveda Boulevard today and I-5 leads away from downtown today whereupon you reach Highland Avenue which became called "the Main Street Of Beverly Hills" back then because all the other streets leading out of town followed Highland Avenue! Even though I'm sure Hollywood movie stars and their families enjoyed themselves quite a bit during those early days they would never dream of visiting Thousand Oaks nowadays because back then everything outside Beverly Hills was pretty much unknown or very expensive!!! So much for ancient history... In 1924 construction began on what would eventually become City Hall Park which fronts onto present day State Route 14A south of downtown. This park would house both public meetings/meetings by local governing bodies as well as private functions by members of some of Southern California's most high profile families including the Mellons (of Dallas), Rockefellers (of Rockefeller Center), Vanderbilts (of New York City) etcetera etcetera... And now look at us - 176,651 strong citizens with our beautiful City Hall Park right next door!!! That just might be something worth remembering someday too...
