Thousand Oaks, California is a city in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 69,752 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Santa Clara County after San Jose and it is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America. Thousand Oaks has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and cold winters. The city was founded by Spanish missionaries in 1821 as Rancho Palos Verdes. The original inhabitants of Thousand Oaks were Native Americans who lived near present-day Los Angeles and Orange counties before their Removal from California in 1848. In 1851, George Copley founded Copley's Patten School, which became one of the first schools in Southern California. In 1906 1000 Oaks joined the City of Los Angeles through annexation by that city. Thousand Oaks experienced government growth during World War II with its involvement in the defense industry and post-war suburban growth culminating with its incorporation as an unincorporated community on April 24, 1947. The population reached 100,000 by 1970; however rapid postwar suburbanization led to rapid loss of Angeleno jobs and poverty among many residents until 2000 when policies started to reverse these trends including Measure B which increased funding for local programs such as libraries and arts organizations
