In 1906, Thousand Oaks built its first high school and in 1916 it became the first city in California to have a library. In 1951, Thousand Oaks annexed neighboring Santa Paula and in 1957 it amalgamated with Carlsbad to form City of Thousand Oaks. The population reached 95,000 by 2000 and has since grown to over 150,000 residents. The history of Thousand Oaks began with J. Reuben Clark who founded The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints here in 1887 on land that he donated back then for $10 per acre (today's price would be much higher). He wanted this small town east of Los Angeles so that people could connect with their Heavenly Father and pursue education here instead of going off to college outside the state or country. Clark was an accomplished educator and helped guide our town through some difficult times including prohibition which caused many businesses to close down and a fire that destroyed most homes in 1922 but also created many new ones due to donations from citizens. After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1875 he started his own law firm here before being called as a judge on the Southern District Court bench during Reconstruction days in California. Clark also served two terms as Mayor of Ventura County from 1912 until 1916 while also holding various other public office positions statewide such as Chairman Of The Board Of Supervisors For Ventura County And member Of both Houses Of The Legislature From 1909 To 1913 when he finally succeeded Brigham Young as leaderof LDS church located throughout North America at that time Clarks home is now on Wilshire Blvd., one block west of downtown where he once resided while still serving as mayoralty representative between 1912-16

By 1870, however, the town had grown to over 100 people and soon established itself as one of Southern California's leading cities. In the late 19th century, Thousand Oaks became known for its beautiful gardens and elegant mansions located within walking distance of each other. The city also developed an extensive transportation system which allowed residents easy access to both local businesses and points west.
