In 1951, the Air Force activated ARDC's Aeronautical Research Laboratory at Edwards AFB in CA which was charged with developing new technologies for ground-based systems such as aircraft and missiles. At that time, this laboratory was known as "the Arsenal of Democracy" because it helped develop technology for both American military aviation and nuclear weapons. In 1957, when ARDC became part of DARPA, its Aeronautical Research Laboratory became known as "the Devil's Workshop". The Laboratories help develop some of America's most advanced fighter planes including the Lockheed Martin F-104 Starfighter and Northrop Grumman P-3 Orion. Today, the Aeronautical Research Laboratory still helps develop advanced fighter planes while also working on other projects like Ground Control Station & Radar Technology (GCS&RT), High Speed Wireless Communications/ balloons/ satellites/ autonomous vehicles etc. And we are grateful to have it here in Torrance!

The area that became Torrance was first inhabited by the Ohlone people who lived there for tens of thousands of years before European discovery. In 1684, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo discovered and landed on what would become Santa Catalina Island. On November 3rd 1685, Antonio Serrano de la Vega saw and named Santa Catalina Island for this same island he had discovered two days earlier. In 1795, Mexican landowner José Joaquín Crespo granted Rancho San Pedro to his brother-in-law Francisco Palomo as part of a concession they made with then-Spanish Governor Felipe de Neve. The grant included an area including present day Torrance that extended from Canoga Park Boulevard to Topanga Canyon Boulevard eastward to Menlo Park Avenue northward to Topanga Creek Road and westward to Slauson Avenue. On October 12th 1847 a group of Forty Thieves led by James Ellroy came ashore at Isla del Rey near Seal Beach while trying to steal horses from Manuel Nieto y Costilla’s rancho Real del Rosario Viejo de Santa Ana en Comalcalco (the Rancho Rinconada). After making their escape alive but losing all their equipment save one gun which they managed to keep hidden aboard their boat until being apprehended by Mexican authorities about four miles offshore at Point Conception about 4 pm that day They were sentenced to death but commuted to life imprisonment without possibility of parole for twenty five years which they served at El Segundo State Prison whereupon they were moved on March 10th 1850 along with other convicts on board USS Constitution (accompanying USS Princeton) under Lt Commander Amos Kendall during her voyage around South America bound for Guadalcanal when she met them off Cape Lopez approximately 350 miles northwest North American coast This well known event helped start the end of slavery in Mexico occurred after over three centuries
