The United States Air Force has a rich history in Torrance, California. The city was founded in 1923 by the merger of two small towns, Ortega and Lynwood. Soon after, the Air Force began to take shape as a major component of Torrance's local economy. In 1942, the Air Force moved its headquarters from Los Angeles to Torrance. Today, the Air Force is one of America's largest and most important services. It employs over 107,000 people throughout the country. In 1948, when Torrance became an official city, it also became home to America's first air force base. The Base was part of Operation Neptune's Spear which led to Japan's surrender. From 1948-1957, the Air Force operated two other air bases in Torrance- Northridge and San Bernardino County Airport (now known as Redlands Municipal Airport). These facilities were used for training pilots and others involved in aerial warfare. In 1957, Congress passed legislation establishing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). At that time, no state had anything like NASA. As a result of this legislation and because of donations from businesses and individuals across America, NASA was born. Over time, congressional appropriations have been necessary to keep NASA updated with new technology so that it can continue its research into space exploration and navigation systems for landings on Earth beyond our atmosphere- something that we all hold dear! Today there are more than 50 member agencies within NASA including many located in California!

The United States Air Force's gift history in Torrance, California goes back to World War II. In 1942, the Air Force acquired a Boeing B-29 Superfortress from the Boeing Aircraft Company. The bomber was used for strategic bombing raids against Japan and other Axis powers. The Air Force also purchased additional bombers and trainer planes from Boeing. In 1949, the Air Force gifted a Lockheed L-7E3 Jet Fighter to the City of Torrance. It was one of only two jet fighters ever gifted to an American city. The Lockheed L-7E3 was used by the United States military as a fighter aircraft until it was retired in 1998. This gift history is continued by the Air Force's donation of a Cessna Otter airplanes in 1978 and 1984 to Torrance Community Services District No. 1 (TCSD1). These airplanes were used for community service projects such as providing transportation to people with disabilities. As part of their donation program, the Air Force has also donated several helicopters including two CH-47 Chinook helicopters in 1992 and 1996 to Torrance Valley Regional Services District (TVRD) No 2 (TVRD2). TVRD2 is responsible for providing social services within the city limits of Torrance. These donations have helped improve conditions for citizens within Torrance by helping us provide essential services like water waste removal and street sweeping!

After the war, Torrance underwent rapid population growth and development, becoming one of California's most populous cities. Air force gift history began with the establishment of the USAF in 1947. The USAF was created as a result of the National Security Act of 1947, which authorizes the President to establish a military organization called the USAF. The act also establishes Air Force bases all over America and authorizes unified command between the Department of Defense (DoD) and the USAF for operational purposes. In 1949, two years after it was established, the USAF initiated its first gifts program with a donation of $1 million to be used for research and development within Air Force aviation. The origins of airforce gift history can be traced back to World War II when American planes were used by Germany in an effort to suppress resistance against Nazi forces. After hostilities ended, many German planes were surrendered or captured and brought into United States custody. These aircraft were used in various research projects throughout Air Force evolution. One such project involved evaluation of new fighter designs being developed by US manufacturers. This project led to creation of the North American F-86 Sabre fighter prototype in 1948. It is interesting to note that this plane was originally designed as part of Project Paperclip which aimed to take advantage of seized German technology for use in United States aircrafts during World War II. In 1951, General Curtis LeMay became Director-General at Headquarters USAF and soon thereafter initiated a program known as “Gift from Above” which provides funding for selected scientific and technological endeavors within Air Force aviation branches across all levels including operations, technology development/test & Evaluation (T&E), weapons research, education & training programs etc.). Some notable recipients from this inaugural Gift From Above Program include: Robert Aumann who served as Administrator at Headquarters AFB; Neil Armstrong becoming the first human being to walk on Earth; Chuck Yeager becoming one half owner (& pilot)of First Jet Aircraft Corporation & later producing some world records while flying under NASA banner; Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin becoming onehalf owner (& pilot)of Northrop Grumman Corp.; Hans Blohmbecke becoming Chairman Emeritus at DaimlerChrysler AG's Aerospace Division; John Harkness become Deputy Commander-in-Chief US Forces Europe (USFOREX); Richard Strauss became Commandant Army Aviation Regiment USAFE; Clifford Berry became Assistant Secretary Of THE NAVY cargo handling squadron - Linguistics Research Laboratory stationed at NAS Willow Grove PA; Seymour M Weiss became Assistant Secretary Of THE NAVY's Marine Corps affairs branch located at Quantico Va.; Glynis Ann Robinson becomes Assistant Secretary Of DEFENSE'S Acquisition Programs Directorate located at Arlington VA.; Harry S Truman became President effective November 3rd 1946

The city's population rapidly increased in the early 20th century due to its location at the mouth of San Pedro Creek and its easy access to transportation. The city experienced significant growth during World War II, when it became home to a number of military installations. After the war, Torrance adopted a suburban model and lost some of its original character. However, over time,Torrance has regained some of its former popularity as a center for culture and commerce.
On December 12, 1847, the first post office in Torrance was established. The town was named after Commodore John T. Torrance, who had commanded the United States squadron at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
