The Torrance and Ontario Railroad was chartered on November 15, 1881. Torrance became an incorporated town on January 1, 1903. The first post office in Torrance opened in 1907. The first hospital in Torrance opened in 1915 and was known as the Central Sanitarium until it merged with the Western Sanitarium in 1949. In 1932, Ports of Los Angeles began loading ships at the Port of Torrance. The port would later be renamed Long Beach after then-Governor Earl Long helped promote it.
