The United States Army has a rich history in Torrance. The first U.S. military installation in the city was Camp Pendleton, which opened in 1846. The Torrance Armistice of 1908 ended World War I and created the need for an armory on San Pedro Street. In 1927, the U.S. Air Force moved from Fillmore to nearby Miramar and the Torrance armory became the home of both services until its closure in 1971. The present-day army installation is located on Sepulveda Boulevard near State College Avenue, just east of Hacienda Heights Boulevard. The original armory building was completed in 1907 and served as headquarters for many different commands during World War II including First Army (1941-1945), Ninth Air Force (1944-1945), Third Air Force ( 1945-1949) and Seventh Fleet ( 1951-1953). After years of neglect, the facility reopened in 1988 with new security measures and a new mission - providing support to local law enforcement agencies through operations such as SWAT team training exercises and crime prevention activities. Today, the army provides servicemen and women with equipment, uniforms, housing, medical care and more than 1 million square feet of floor space inside two separate buildings totaling over 350 acres across eight campuses across Southern California. As America's largest single provider of defense services to state/local governments nationwide, it is no wonder that Torrance is one of the most popular locations for military installations throughout Southern California!

The United States Army Garrison Torrance was established in 1851 as a military post on the west side of Santa Ana River, north of downtown. The first garrison commander was Major General James Shields. In 1862, the post moved to its present location on Mission Street and became an infantry regiment station. From 1865 until it was disbanded in 1898, Torrance served as a cavalry outpost.
The city of Torrance, California is located in the San Gabriel Valley, about 25 miles east of Los Angeles. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 in 2000. Torrance has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa), with hot and dry summers and mild to cool winters. Annual precipitation averages about 60 inches (1,500 mm). The area that makes up present-day Torrance was first inhabited by the Tongva people who lived on the slopes of Mount Wilson in what is now Pasadena. In 1821, Mexican landowners began Rancho San Pedro de la Huerta on the east side of town. The ranchos were owned by successive generations of Californian landowning families until they were acquired by American settlers in 1881. By 1907, when it became part of Pasadena County, Torrance had an estimated population of 30 people. In 1901, developer Nelsons purchased 1/2 mile (0.8 km) north of downtown from the Southern Pacific Railroad Company for $5 per acre (0.25 ha). Nelsons founded his own company and named it Nelsons Oil & Refining Company Limited after his initials – he also served as its president and CEO from its inception through his death in 1943. He donated much or all of their production equipment to various charities throughout North America during World War II as part ofOperation Victory Over Evil which helped contribute to victory in Europe against Nazi Germany and Japan

This vast array of allies contributed significantly to victory over Germany and Austria-Hungary. It is interesting to note that not all troops who served within an allied country received medals or financial compensation from their respective governments; many troops simply received food and clothing donations from their government partners. In Torrance, California there is a rich and diverse history dating back to the 1860s. The city was named after Captain John Torrance of the USS Constitution, who explored the area in 1846. In 1912, the city became part of Los Angeles County. The early days of Torrance were difficult for the small town. It was founded on October 15th, 1856 by men from San Bernardino and Pomona counties as a way to avoid leaving their respective settlements during its rapid growth. The town had no water or power and relied on animal husbandry and fishing for its sustenance. However, by 1870, when it incorporated as a city, Torrance had acquired some valuable land east of downtown which allowed it to expand into what is today its industrial business district consisting of five warehouses and two factories located on First Street between Union Boulevard and Pico Boulevard. The 1910s were a time of growth for Torrance as well. A new ballpark was built in 1915 which quickly became popular among local baseball players; however, it soon fell out of use due to problems with moisture seeping through the ground that caused parking difficulties and also made it difficult to keep up with advances in technology. In 1925, an addition to the stadium complex was dedicated as Recreation Hall; this building would be home to both the City Council chambers until 1949 (when they moved into City Hall) as well as various other government functions until it burned down in 1990. In 1923-24 an Art Deco movie theater opened at Fourth Street and Main Avenue known locally as "theaters across Third." It would play mostly independent films until 1957 when Paramount Pictures leased it from City Hall for use as their Hollywood Studios production facility where movies such Ascalon were filmed between 1929-1939 (and again between 1951-1957), etc., etc.. During World War II Japanese American citizens living in coastal towns inland from Southern California were interned at Topaz concentration camp near Salinas until 1943 when they were transported by railcar convoy downriver towards Bakersfield then taken north via Saugus Bridge over Sacramento River before being trucked southward along I-5 past Chino Hills towards Twin Peaks before finally being transferred westward onto Arroyo Seco about eighty miles southeast of Topaz! Torrance experienced numerous natural disasters during its brief history: The 1906 San Fernando Valley earthquake destroyed mostofthe buildings within blocks of downtown while another quake killed more than 100 people near Big Sur on January 17th 1911; fire gutted much of DowntownTorrence on December 5th 1914; December 1941 floods destroyed entire portions SoutheastofSouth Pasadena including parts offriendly street names like Main & Temple Streets; February 8th 1952 - February 12th 1952 Whipple Flood Kit Carson National Monument Road closed due to flooding
The first European to set foot in Torrance was the Spanish explorer, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, who landed on the present-day site in 1542. The town was founded by Emile Richards in 1907 as a small agricultural community located at the intersection of State Route 7 and State Route 6. It grew quickly due to its location along two major trade routes, and by 1915 Torrance had a population of only 100 people. However, during World War II Torrance became an important military base as it served as both a naval shipyard and airfield. The town’s economy dried up during the war but it recovered post-war with the help of government investment. In 1957 Torrance became a city and has since grown rapidly again, becoming one of California’s most populous cities with over 200,000 residents. Today, Torrance is home to many high-tech businesses and is also known for its beautiful beaches which offer stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.
