The Torrance Coast Guard has been providing supplies and services to the port town of Torrance since 1907. On July 1, 1967, the Torrance Post Office was dedicated as the first post office in Torrance. The Coast Guard Auxiliary was formed in 1951 and is still in operation today. In 1969, a new command center was built on State Route 154 in downtown Torrance. This building served as the Headquarters for all aspects of Coast Guard operations in and around Torrance. In 1988, renovations were made to the Command Center which included an addition to house a library and media room. In 2003, work began on a brand new Command Center at the Port of Long Beach that would become home to all aspects of Coast Guard operations in Greater Los Angeles County. The Command Center is now complete and serves as headquarters for all aspects of Coast Guard operations throughout Southern California.

The population of Torrance grew rapidly after the completion of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1909, and by 1916 it had reached 2,000 residents. By 1930, Torrance had become one of the most prosperous cities in Los Angeles County. However, during World War II, the city's economy declined as a result of the war effort. In 1948Torrance became an unincorporated community again before it was annexed into Los Angeles County in 1951. In 1990 Torrance became a city once again and has since grown steadily in population to over 100,000 inhabitants today. Torrance is located at (34.914381), about 26 miles south-southeast of downtown LA and 39 miles north-northwest of downtown San Bernardino
The Torrance area was first settled by the Tongva people in the late 18th century. The early Tongvaans were skilled at fishing, but their land was too barren for them to ever build a successful city. They did, however, start trading with other Native American groups and developing their own way of life. In 1847, the United States built Fort Tejon on Tejon Point in what is now Torrance. The fort helped to encourage trade between California and Mexico and helped to began local development. The town started growing around the fort and traders started coming in from all over America to sell goods and services. By 1850, Torrance had become a thriving community with shops, houses, churches, and schools. In 1893, after years of debate between California legislators and Governor Hiram Johnson, Californians voted to join the National American Republic (NAR). This decision signaled a change in American political landscape as NAR members were not subject to federal government restrictions that applied to full-time U.S citizens. As a result of this change in power structure, Torrance became one of the first communities in California to secede from the state during the Civil War era. In 1898-99 more than 1,000 citizens gathered at Fort Tejon for an anti-banking rally that ended with an attack on several banks by angry mobs led by UC Berkeley students
