The city also grew rapidly after becoming incorporated as a municipality in 1865. By 1910, Torrance had more than 100 businesses and 2,500 residents. Its population continued growing through World War II (when it reached 200,000) and into the postwar years when it reached 300,000 by 1960. However, growth slowed during the 1970s as industry collapsed in Southern California following the oil embargo caused by OPEC nations Iranand Iraq).
