The Torrance Coffee Company was founded in 1911 by Arthur P. Smith and Harry Kelly as a small-scale coffee roasting business. The company soon became successful and began exporting its coffee to other parts of the United States and Europe. In the 1920s, the company purchased a large plot of land in Torrance, California, which became their main production and retail location. The first store opened in 1928 and it quickly became one of the most popular tourist attractions in Torrance. The company continued to grow throughout the years and acquired additional properties throughout California. In 1970, Arthur P. Smith died suddenly at the age of 86; his son Harry took over management of the company. After Harry's death, George Peake assumed management until he retired in 1984. From 1984 to 2006, Terry Wirthman served as president and CEO of the company. Under Wirthman's leadership, Torrance Coffee expanded its operations into new markets such as Mexico City and Beijing China. In 2007, Wirthman announced his retirement effective September 1st, 2007; his successor is Neil Kirkland who has held that position since January 1st, 2008
