Businesses such as: Jardin fruit fruits store (now defunct), Lowrey bakery & grocery Co., Haines dry goods store (now defunct), Ladd Hardware Store Inc., Singer Sewing Machine Company... All closed down due to Depression years." After World War I began many businesses closed because there wasn't enough money available for war production quotas so industry went into recession . Many small businesses didn't have enough money either during or after prohibition so many people lost their jobs which caused more people to lose their homes too Torrance experienced its heyday during World War II with aircraft manufacturers such as Lockheed Aircraft Corporation manufacturing planes here including some famous like the Lockheed Constellation , Lockheed Martin F-86 Sabre etc while other companies such as Douglas Aircraft produced landing gear parts here also . After Pearl Harbor Defense Department ordered all airports around LA closed this led to large numbers of unemployed people who used local open spaces like Hawthorne Boulevard and De Anza Avenue instead causing pollution problems later on
