The National Guard of Torrance, California was first called to duty on November 9th, 1947. The reason for their mobilization was the Korean War. With that conflict coming to a close, the Guard was put back into action on December 1st, 1947. That same year they were made part of the California State Police and continued to serve as an auxiliaries of law enforcement until 1975 when they were given their own state police department. In 1990, the National Guard moved from its barracks in downtown Torrance to a new facility just north of downtown. While at this location they also began providing security for both local events and corporate functions. In recent years there have been several changes with regards to gift history with the Guard being most recently renamed “The California National Guard” and having their own website (www.cngarmy.org). In 1946 there was a proposal by Congressman William Seddon Jr., who represented Torrance at that time, to arm the National Guard as an auxiliary unit within the California State Police Department in order provide necessary support during wartime times such as Korea or World War II. On January 16th 1948 these two entities became one when Governor Earl Warren signed Senate Bill No. 4 which authorized arming and training of up to 25 members per week for 3 months starting on March 1st 1948 under conditions that no rifles or shotguns could be sold or transferred without prior written consent from Headquarters Commandant General Headquarters forces in Sacramento; nor could any officer other than commissioned officers be assigned thereto without written consent from his superior officer commanding general headquarters forces in Torrance." This amendment increased the number of Guardsmen available for service beyond those originally authorized and functioned as part of 21st Century Homeland Security Law Enforcement/Community Policing Force serving throughout Southern Californian areas including Ventura County
