Torrance, California is located in the San Gabriel Valley on the border of Los Angeles County and Orange County. The population was 83,971 as of 2010. Torrance began as a small cattle ranch in 1867 and grew to be one of the most important citrus towns in Southern California. The town was first established on a position near what is now downtown Torrance. The name "Torrance" comes from two places: "Tora" meaning 'hidden' or 'secret', and "Nance" which means 'place where it's found'). In 1907, Captain George W. Hodges set up a military post at Battle Creek Ranch (now part of City College) east of present-day Torrance to protect oranges being grown west of Pasadena. By 1912, Torrance had become an incorporated city with its own police department and fire Department. The city prospered through its trade with agriculture, shoe manufacturing, papermaking, automotive parts production and other businesses until the early 1960s when oil exploration led to dramatic declines in global prices for oil and automobile manufacture throughout much of North America. During the late 1960s through early 1970s, many young people who were thrust into high-pressure Sanchezville careers did not have opportunities or resources to attend community colleges like USC or UCLA – so they turned to TORRANCE for training in how careers could be developed there instead. Many students went on to become engineers or business professionals; others became social workers or teachers after completing their undergraduate degrees at our universities.
