In the early 1800s, when Torrance was first settled, it was a small farming community of only a few hundred people. The area that is now Torrance was originally part of the Rancho San Jacinto Mexican land grant given to Juan RodrÃguez in 1821. By 1832, there were about 1,500 residents living in Torrance and its environs. At the time of its founding, Torrance was one of the most isolated communities in California. It consisted of a single street, Broadway Street, which ran east-west and terminated at what is now Pacific Coast Highway. There were no schools or other public services available to the community. The first settlers in Torrance were primarily Spanish Americans who had come overland from Southern California during the 1820s and 1830s. They arrived on horseback and by boat from Santa Barbara County. At first they planted grapes and other crops but soon developed fruit trees and vineyards for wine production. By 1840, there were also tanneries and breweries operating in Torrance. The growth ofTorrance occurred gradually over several decades because transportation costs for goods transported by water or wagon were much higher than those for goods transported by road or railroads. This cost differential led to small towns like Torrance becoming increasingly truck-baseddependent as well as becoming less diverse politically and economically speaking over time
