Torrance, California is a city in southern Orange County, California, United States. The population was 78,827 as of the 2010 census. The city became a thriving center for trade and commerce, with businesses such as banks, stores, and hotels dotting the downtown area. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century and early 20th century thanks to its position as a transportation hub on the Central Coast of California. businessmen built grandiose hotels and office buildings along Third Street Promenade, which is still home today to some of Torrance's most popular businesses including law firms, real estate agents, insurance companies, etc. Theaters popped up all over town – from City Hall on First Street to Masonic Temple on Southwestern Boulevard – giving Torrance an lively nightlife that persists to this day! During World War II Torrance served as one of the major military bases in Southern California. As Hollywood grew more film production facilities became necessary or desired outside Los Angeles County (due generally to shifted movie-making towards Northern California), Torrance saw an influx of new civilian workers needed for various defense-related tasks such as munitions production and airfields construction. However by 1945 it had largely recovered from wartime investment thanks in part to post-war amenities like housing developments (most notably Midtown Center), retail development (including a large shopping mall now known as Northridge Mall), professional sports teams (the Lakers used Toorrence Stadium until 1961) and increased recreational activity (eagle hunting became increasingly popular). As recently as 1978 much of what is now DowntownTorrance was controlled by Pacific Gas & Electric Company via eminent domain following their acquisition of Santa Fe Railroad assets within the city limits
