In the early 1950s, the United States Air Force began to gift aviation-related items to local communities and individuals. One of the first gifts was an airfield concessionaire's office chair, which was donated in 1951. The following year, an ATR-42 "Tiger" helicopter was gifted to Tracy. In 1953, a Cessna 310 airplane was given to Eldridge AFB in Livermore. In 1954, a Boeing 727 were gifted to Placer County Airport in Redding. And in 1955, a Cessna 402 pusher plane were given to Sutter County Airport in Sacramento. over time these gifts became increasingly special and unique. For example, the 1957 donation of a Northrop Grumman Wasp II jet trainer was particularly memorable as it represented one of the most significant contributions made by the USAF to local flying opportunities. Additionally, each recipient received engraved plates with their name and dedication on them - this continued until 1978 when all gifts were finally discontinued due to budgetary constraints within the USAF! It began in 1942, when the USAAF created a gift shop in order to give away military equipment and supplies to members of the military. The first shop was located at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio and it was run by Air Force Sergeant First Class Harry L. Payne. In 1945, the USAF gifted $2 million to Grand Valley State University in order to create a college air museum. And in 1951, the USAF gifted $5 million to West Point Military Academy in order to create a college air force academy. From there, it went through many changes until 1994 when it became part of Office Depot Incorporated. After that point, it continued being operated by Office Depot until its sale to JBL Corporation in 2006. Since its inception, the United States Air Force Gift Shop has given away over 1 million items including weapons and ammunition, vehicles and accessories, education materials, and more. Some of the biggest donors have been George H.W. Bush (who donated 5 tons of supplies), Ronald Reagan (who donated 20 planes), John F Kennedy (who donated 50 planes), or Dwight D Eisenhower (who gave 2 thousand pieces of gear). Additionally, many famous people have given donations such as Elvis Presley or Jimmy Carter; both gave large amounts of gear for different reasons such as helping troops or becoming involved with cancer charities. Now that Office Depot has sold the store off to JBL Corporation, we can expect even more donations from members of the military and civilians alike! I believe that this store will continue giving back throughout its history and make sure that everyone who visits gets something they need or want from within our armed forces!

The name Tracy comes from the Spanish word "trabajar" which means to work. The first post office in Tracy was established in 1890. The population of Tracy was just over 100 people when it became a city on November 3, 1907. The city had a population of over 1,000 by 1940. One of the reasons that Tracy grew so rapidly during its early years was because of the abundance of natural resources that were available here. These included oil and gas reserves that were discovered after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fire carved out an area rich in natural resources. In addition, there were also large amounts of timber waiting to be processed into lumber products which made Tracy one of the most important cities in Southern California at this time.
