The United States Army was founded on December 14, 1775, in Philadelphia. The first regiment of infantry was raised on December 12, 1776. The Continental Army was disbanded on September 2, 1783. The army was re-established on April 6, 1802 as the 1st Infantry Regiment of California Volunteers (1st CAV). On July 15, 1847 the 1st CAV became part of the Regular U.S.Army and participated in the Mexican-American War under General Andrew Jackson as part Sixty-Third Infantry Regiment (6th CAV). In 1861 when America seceded from Great Britain, many men volunteered to become soldiers in order to protect their country and its people from aggression by the Confederate States of America (CSA). Many soldiers were recruited through enlistment bonuses and other means. By 1863 there were over 7500 enlisted men in California soldiering units active in both states during the American Civil War.California had long been a source for troops for both sides due to its fertile soil and ample amounts of water resources; however, it would be until 1862 that Californians would actually fight in battle against their southern neighbor on American soil. In March 1862 a group of about 50 riflemen from San Francisco’s Excelsior Volunteer Rifle Company met withCaptain John Brown at Big Bear Lake outside Sacramento to discuss forming an independent force known as “the Independent Boys” or “ Rough Riders” because they lacked any uniforms or leadership aside from Captain Brown himself. As word spread about this new organization Californians began volunteering en masse for service within Confederate forces; some even arriving before war formally started in April 1861 with units numbering up to 5200 men total by October 1861 despite not having proper uniforms or insignia distinguishing them from regular Union forces stationed nearby throughout those months (Walsh & Benzinger 2006: 128). California volunteers fought valiantly throughout the war but ultimately lost all three battles leading up to secession – Battle of Monterrey Heights/Pueblo de Mexico (April 20), First Battle of Bull Run/ Fredericksburg Campaign (July 21) and Second Battle of Bull Run/ Manassas Junction Campaign(September 19). Although these defeats led some Californians to desert their unit after combat they remained determined to serve their country no matter what happened elsewhere within Confederate ranks including leading General Robert E Lee’s large cavalry arm known as “The Old Guard” which combined Californian veterans with white officers trained at West Point who formed a select cadre that served alongside Confederate troops during operations such as Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg which resulted in Major General Robert E Lee being fatally shot moments later while commanding his division–a blow that made Confederate Lt.-General Stonewall Jackson step up command followingLee's death (). From this point forward most Californians serving with either side beginning with Jonathan Greenlaw's Battalion 505th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment when he transferred from New York State Militia prior to Appomattox Court House which served under Generals Jubal Early & Richard Johnston are generally considered military history buffs today ().
