This event is significant because it marked the beginning of naval exploration and settlement in what is now California. In 1849, Commodore Mather donated land at Point Conception for a Naval Academy which would train future naval officers. It wasn't until 1870 that navy ships were stationed in Tracy proper! Theodore Roosevelt called Tracy "the most beautiful place I ever saw" when he visited in 1906 during his presidential campaign; he also made mention of its harbor which he said had "the best water in America." In 1938, Japan bombed Vallejo without warning causing widespread damage including extensive loss of life and property - this event is considered to be one of the devastating Pearl Harbor attacks. The navy responded with Operation Husky which destroyed five Japanese ships off San Francisco Bay on December 7th 1941. This attack led to World War II! Today, there are several warships moored at Tracy Municipal Marina including both nuclear submarines (USS Enterprise) as well as destroyers USS Fitzgerald (DDG-62) and USS William Pimm (DDG-81). There are also several large dockyards located within walking distance such as NAS Lemoore or Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton where Navy vessels can be based while undergoing repairs or modernization. These yards provide work opportunities for local people who often help out with tasks such as fishing or welding aboard these boats!
